Geumneung or Hamdeok: which Jeju beach wins for you

An honest head to head between Geumneung and Hamdeok on Jeju, with a clear winner for families, sunset chasers and short city stays.

Published 2026-10-06. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

The verdict in one screen

If you are staying near Jeju City or flying in for a short trip and want the closest genuinely good beach with cafes within steps of the sand, go to Hamdeok Beach. If you are basing yourself on the west coast, want more room on bright white shell sand and plan to stay for a sunset that frames an offshore island, go to Geumneung Beach. Both give you the clear turquoise shallows Jeju is loved for, and both stay gentle a long way out, so neither is a wrong answer. The difference is geography, elbow room and what you want from the end of the day.

Put plainly: Hamdeok is the convenient one and Geumneung is the roomy one. Hamdeok wins on ease and on everything being to hand. Geumneung wins on space and on the west coast evening light. Below I pull the two apart on sand, water, facilities and crowd, then flag the exact situations where the loser suddenly becomes the right call.

Sand and setting

Both bays trade on the same Jeju trick, pale sand against dark basalt that turns the water a vivid jade in good light. The character is slightly different in each.

Geumneung has the bright white shell sand of the west coast, soft underfoot and genuinely dazzling in strong sun. It runs as a generous open bay, and because fewer people make the short step over to it from the busier stretch next door, there is usually more clean sand to pick from. If your idea of a good beach day includes spreading out without a neighbour's parasol in your lap, this is the one.

Hamdeok is a compact, well kept bay rather than a vast strip. The soft white sand sits below the little Seoubong peak, which gives the beach a friendly, contained feel and a built in short walk. It is tidy and easy to manage with children, and the dark rock framing it makes the shallows glow. What it does not offer is the sheer open room of Geumneung, so in the summer peak the usable sand fills fast.

Rule of thumb: for the most space per towel, Geumneung. For the prettiest compact bay with a walk built in, Hamdeok.

Water and swimming

This is where the two beaches are closest, and both are strong family choices. For a wider look at the shores that suit young swimmers, the family beach guide for the island is a useful companion read.

Geumneung sits on the west coast, which is calmer than the windward east, and its water is clear, turquoise and very shallow well out from shore. It is one of the gentlest and warmest feeling swims on the island in season and a reassuring wade for children. There are rocky patches to mind underfoot, so watch where small feet go.

Hamdeok is also clear, turquoise and shallow a long way out, which makes it one of the gentlest swims near the city. The bay is usually calm. Jeju is a windy island, though, and both beaches can turn choppy on a blowy afternoon, so treat conditions as typical and never guaranteed at either. At both, lifeguards are posted during the official beach season through July and August, when the swim zone is marked, and outside those months there is no cover and the water is cool to cold. Neither beach comes with a swimming safety promise, so read the sea on the day.

Honestly, on water alone this is close to a tie. Both are shallow, both are gentle, both are weather dependent. The west coast calm gives Geumneung a slight edge on a breezy day, but not enough to be the deciding factor for most people.

Facilities and crowd

Here the two separate again. Hamdeok is the better equipped of the pair and the busier for it.

Hamdeok has showers, changing rooms and toilets, a campground behind the sand, and a cluster of cafes, restaurants and convenience stores around the bay, several with views over the water. For a day where you do not want to bring everything with you, it is among the most comfortable beaches on Jeju. That convenience is also its catch. The proximity to the city means a busy beach and a full car park in the summer peak, so the trade for all those cafes is more people sharing them.

Geumneung keeps things calmer. It has showers, changing rooms and toilets in season, a campground behind part of the bay, and a scattering of cafes and shops nearby, with a larger spread a short walk along the shore. It is comfortable and family friendly without the bustle. You give up a little of Hamdeok's density of venues and gain noticeably more quiet.

Both are free public beaches with open access and no admission to the sand. In summer each has seasonal rentals for parasols, mats and tubes at rates set on the day and to be confirmed. Do not expect a club gate or a ticket at either.

Getting there

Access is the clearest practical split. Hamdeok is in Jocheon on the northeast coast, the closest good beach to Jeju City, around thirty minutes east by car on the ring road and under twenty minutes by taxi, with buses running from the city in roughly forty to fifty minutes. If your time is short or you are near the airport, that counts for a lot.

Geumneung is on the west coast in Hallim, around fifty minutes by car west of Jeju City. The blue intercity bus that circles the west coast stops nearby, a short walk from the sand along the shore. Parking is a little easier here than at the busier bay next door, though both fill in summer. It is the better bet when the west of the island is already your base, less so for a quick dash from the city.

Sunset and the extras

If you care about the end of the day, Geumneung has the stronger hand. The west coast sunset behind the offshore island is one of the finest on Jeju, and Geumneung sees far fewer people for it than the headline beaches. Stay on the sand into the evening on a clear day and you get a quiet, lovely close to a west coast trip.

Hamdeok's extra is different and still worth having: the fifteen to twenty minute climb up Seoubong for a wide view back over the turquoise bay. It is an easy add on to a beach morning and the photograph most people take here. So the choice of extras is a walk with a view at Hamdeok against an unhurried sunset at Geumneung. For couples weighing the evening mood, the couples guide to the island leans into the sunset side of that question.

When the other one wins

No single answer survives every traveller, so here are the flips.

  • Choose Hamdeok over Geumneung when you are short on time, based near Jeju City or the airport, or want cafes and facilities within steps of your towel. For a half day with everything to hand, it is hard to beat.
  • Choose Geumneung over Hamdeok when you want space on the sand, when you are already exploring the west coast near Hallim, or when a long slow sunset is the point of the outing rather than an afterthought.
  • If a breezy afternoon is forecast, the calmer west coast at Geumneung has a slight edge for a settled swim, though both are weather dependent and never guaranteed.
  • If the summer peak crowd puts you off, lean to Geumneung for room, or arrive at Hamdeok early before the car park fills.

Timing matters as much as the beach you pick. July and August are the swim months at both, with late July often the sweet spot once the monsoon breaks, while May, June and October suit the sand, the walk and the sunset without swimming. The season by season rundown for Jeju is worth a look before you lock in dates, and the wider island beach index helps if you are still shortlisting.

Still torn between west coast options? A couple of close neighbours make useful comparisons, from this look at Geumneung against the spring bath bay at Gwakji to the Geumneung versus Gimnyeong Seongsegi matchup on the opposite coast.

Planning a club day on Jeju

Geumneung and Hamdeok are both free public beaches rather than club shores, so there is no day bed to reserve at either. If you would rather pair a beach morning with a booked club setting elsewhere on the island, browse the options and enquire on the Jeju beach club page, where you can ask about availability and plan a club day to suit your trip.
