Faragas or Golden Beach: Which Paros Shore Wins
Published 2026-08-28. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.
Here is the short version before you scroll: the wind decides this one. If the north wind is up and you want a calm, grown up swim in clear water with a design led club and an unhurried lunch, go to Faragas. If the morning is still and you want space, gentle shallow water for children, or one of the best windsurf venues in the Cyclades, go to Golden Beach. Neither is better in the abstract. They are answers to different questions, and the forecast is the question.
Both sit on the southern half of the island, both are golden sand, and both are an easy drive from Parikia and the airport. That is roughly where the similarity ends. One is a sheltered 300 metre cove built for stillness. The other is a 700 metre open sweep that the Meltemi turns into a board venue by afternoon. Read the wind, know your group, and the choice makes itself.
Who Faragas is for
Faragas is the smart bolt hole for a breezy day. Its whole appeal is its southern aspect, which shelters the cove from the north wind, so it stays calm and swimmable when the exposed coasts are chopped up. When the Meltemi gets going and half the island is fighting sand in their faces, this is where composed travellers quietly disappear to.
The picture here is grown up rather than lively. About 300 metres of golden sand form a sheltered cove, with a low headland dividing the beach club from the quieter public sand alongside. The water is clear and turquoise and usually calm, among the stillest swimming you will find on a windy day. The beach club is design led, all wood and cream fabric, with sunbeds, umbrellas and a good kitchen, kept low key on purpose. This is a place for a long lunch and a still swim, not for a scene.
Suit yourself to Faragas if you are a couple, or a group who would rather read and swim and eat well than chase watersports. The smart play is a morning bed on the sheltered cove, then a walk over the low headland to the quieter public sand when you want a little more room. If you want to understand where it sits among the island's more polished options, our guide to the calmest Paros beaches for two puts it in company.
Come to Faragas for calm and refinement rather than buzz or long sand. It is a drive south of the busy coasts, and that distance is part of the point.
What to know before you go
It lies on the south coast near Aliki, about twenty to twenty five minutes by car from Parikia and the airport and thirty five from Naoussa. There is no frequent bus, so a hire car or scooter is the practical way to arrive, and the parking near the beach fills on calm peak days. Prices at the club sit at the higher end for Paros and are set by the venue, so treat any minimum spend or bed hire as to be confirmed on the day. Lifeguard cover varies by year and is not guaranteed, so watch your group and judge the sea for yourself even in a sheltered cove.
Who Golden Beach is for
Golden Beach is the family beach and the windsurfer's beach, sometimes on the same morning. It is the longest open sand on Paros, a 700 metre Blue Flag sweep on the southeast coast, and the soft golden sand shelves gently into the sea. On a calm day the northern end is genuinely lovely for children, with wide sand and shallow water that stays gentle for a long way out. The same exposure that makes it good for families is what makes it a world respected windsurf and kitesurf venue, with established schools renting kit and giving lessons through the season.
So there are really two Golden Beaches, and they share a clock. The morning belongs to loungers and paddling families. The afternoon, when the Meltemi fills in, belongs to the boards. That reliable wind has made this a regular World Cup windsurfing host, which is a fair way of saying the same breeze that thrills the sailors can chase the sunbeds off the sand. Treat a calm morning here as the prize.
Choose Golden Beach if you want space over intimacy, if you have children who want to run and paddle, or if you or anyone in the group wants to get on a board. The best spot for calm swimming and easy shade is the northern end, with the surf centres and the action kept down toward the southern stretch. Families weighing up the island's easier sands will find it alongside its rivals in our rundown of Paros beaches that work with children.
What to know before you go
It sits on the southeast coast near Drios, about twenty minutes by car from Parikia and the airport and roughly twenty five to thirty from Naoussa. A summer bus serves the southeast beaches, and there is parking behind the sand that fills in peak season, so arriving early helps in more ways than one. Sunbed and umbrella hire is organised in sections and set locally, so treat prices as to be confirmed. As at Faragas, lifeguard cover varies by year and is not guaranteed, and here you also want to mind the wind and keep an umbrella for shade.
The head to head
Line the two up and the contrasts are clean.
- Sand. Faragas is a compact cove of about 300 metres split by a low headland. Golden Beach is a 700 metre open sweep and the longest beach on the island. If you want room to spread far from your neighbours, that is a Golden Beach point.
- Water. Faragas is calm and clear and sheltered, among the stillest swimming on a breezy day. Golden Beach is shallow and gently shelving close in, which suits children and easy swimmers, but it is exposed, so the calm is a morning thing rather than an all day promise.
- Facilities. Faragas centres on a single design led beach club and restaurant. Golden Beach spreads out with sunbeds, a handful of tavernas and beach bars, and well known windsurf and kitesurf schools. One is a polished lunch, the other is a working beach with more going on.
- Crowd and mood. Faragas is low key, grown up and away from the crowds. Golden Beach is broader in feel, busier in high season, and split between loungers and sailors.
When the other one wins
This is where honesty earns its keep. If you have arrived at Faragas expecting a long spread of sand for a big group and a lot of activity, you have picked wrong: it is a small cove with one refined club, and Golden Beach is the answer for space and life. Equally, if you have driven to Golden Beach on a strong Meltemi day dreaming of a serene lounging afternoon, the wind will win and the sunbeds may not, and Faragas is the calm you actually wanted. Check the forecast the night before and let it steer you.
There is also the case where neither is quite it. If you want genuinely unusual scenery and a swim among sculpted granite, the sheltered coves of Kolymbithres Beach in Naoussa bay are the island's signature and calmer in a north wind than the southeast can be. If you are based in Parikia and want a quiet, convenient sandy day without the drive, the easy water taxi across the bay to Krios makes more sense than either. And if your priority is wild space with no service and no crowd, the dune backed run at Lageri is the antidote to an organised beach, provided you come self sufficient with water and shade.
The verdict, sharpened
For couples and calm seekers, especially on a windy day: Faragas. For families and anyone wanting space or a board: Golden Beach, ideally in the morning. The flip is almost always the wind, and occasionally the size of your group. If you are still building the wider plan, our overview of the island's beaches and the notes on timing your visit will help you slot these two into the right days.
Booking a club day
If a bed on the cove at Faragas or an organised spot along Golden Beach is what you are after, plan it before you travel rather than on arrival, particularly for the calm peak days when parking and sunbeds go early. Browse our Paros beach clubs page to compare the options and enquire about a club day at either shore.
