The verdict, before you unfold your towel
If you want soft footing, flat water and a full resort strip at your back, book Becici Beach and stop reading. It is a rare long sweep of soft sand on a coast that is mostly pebble, the bay sits calm and almost lake like on most days, and there is enough behind it to run a whole family holiday without a car. That combination is the reason Becici wins for families, easy swimmers and anyone who has ever spent a day wincing across shingle.
If you would rather have room, watersports and a big open bay that can absorb a crowd, go to Jaz Beach instead. It is pebble and coarse gravel, it faces open sea, and it trades the soft comfort of Becici for space, jet skis, parasails and the sort of scale that a July weekend cannot fill. Jaz is the active choice, and it is the one that suits confident swimmers who like water that deepens quickly.
Neither is objectively better. They are two different days out, and the honest task here is to tell you which day is yours, and to be specific about the conditions that flip the answer.
Sand versus pebble, the difference you feel first
This is the split that decides most of it. Becici is a genuine sandy beach, a nearly two kilometre run of soft sand and fine gravel from the Zavala peninsula to Rafailovici, with a gentle slope that makes entry easy and a full sandy day possible. You can walk in barefoot, sit a toddler down without a second thought, and lie on the ground rather than on a lounger if you want to. On this coast, that is close to a luxury.
Jaz is a different surface entirely. It is pebble and coarse gravel across two arms of beach that total well over a kilometre, and it shelves into clear water that deepens fairly quickly. Water shoes are not optional here, they are the thing that makes the day comfortable, both getting in and standing on the shore. The reward for the harder footing is clarity and depth, which some swimmers actively prefer. But if barefoot comfort matters, Becici takes this round without argument.
Quick rule: if anyone in your party dislikes pebbles, Becici. If nobody cares and you value space, Jaz.
The water, and the hours that change it
Here is where the two beaches genuinely diverge, and where reading the day matters more than reading a review. Becici is sheltered by the hills that ring the bay, so the water sits calm and almost flat on most days, clear and gently shelving. That shelter is exactly why it is one of the better beaches on this coast for swimming and for paddleboarding, and why the early mornings are close to ideal for stand up paddle and kayak before the afternoon breeze arrives.
Jaz faces the open sea, and it behaves like it. The water is clean and clear, but an afternoon wind can put a real chop on the bay and stir the gravel underfoot. Mornings are usually the calmer swim and paddle window, and by mid afternoon the same wind that unsettles the swimmers is the wind that makes the watersports come alive. So the honest picture is this: on a still morning both bays swim beautifully, but as the day warms, Becici tends to hold its calm while Jaz tends to ruffle up.
As ever on this shore, conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. Lifeguard cover at both beaches is seasonal and never assured, the watersports lanes are real, and the sensible advice is the same everywhere: swim within your depth, mind the watercraft and follow local guidance on the day. Neither beach comes with a promise, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Facilities and the feel of the place
Becici is a full resort beach in the truest sense. Behind the sand you get sunbed hire, bars and restaurants, watersports, paddleboard and kayak rental, and a long promenade that links it to Budva one way and to Rafailovici and Kamenovo the other. It is the kind of beach where you can arrive with nothing and stay all day, and where the walk home along the seafront is part of the pleasure. The flip side is that it is built up and busy in summer, and the space is at the early hours and the far ends rather than the middle in the afternoon.
Jaz is more of a big open field of a beach. Behind the sand sit bars, sunbed hire, jet ski, parasail and kayak operators, and a long stay campsite, with a concert ground set back from the shore that has hosted some of the biggest names in music. It has facilities, but it is not a polished resort strip, and that is precisely why the people who choose it choose it. There is a quieter far end, a former naturist section, when you want room and calm away from the action.
One planning note that matters at Jaz and does not at Becici: check whether a concert falls on your dates. Event days at the Jaz ground draw very large crowds, and the bay and the parking fill completely. On a normal summer day the beach soaks up a crowd with ease. On a concert day it is a different animal, so know before you go.
Crowds, and where the space hides
Both beaches get busy in July and August, but they crowd differently. Becici is long, so the pressure spreads along its length, and the trick is to walk to the Rafailovici end for a quieter patch and the rocks to snorkel, or towards the Zavala headland for the Dukley club scene. Get there early and the far ends of the bay are where the room is.
Jaz is bigger and more open, so it feels less packed even when the numbers are high. The main stretch near the watersports and bars carries the energy, and the far end stays calmer for anyone who wants space. If your idea of a good beach day is not being able to hear your neighbour, Jaz gives you more of that more of the time, concert days aside.
When the other one wins
Becici is my default recommendation for families and easy swimmers, but there are clear situations where Jaz is the better call. If you have come to ride jet skis or a parasail, if you want a bay with genuine room on the water, or if you simply prefer clear deep water and do not mind pebbles, Jaz is the stronger beach. It is also the better pick for a big group that wants to spread out without feeling hemmed in.
And Jaz is my pick for the active traveller, but Becici takes it back the moment soft sand enters the conversation. Small children, anyone who wants to lie on the ground rather than pay for a lounger, morning paddleboarders who want reliable calm, and anyone who wants restaurants and a promenade within a barefoot walk: that is Becici, decisively. The choice really does hinge on surface, shelter and the kind of day you are after.
If neither quite fits, the wider coast has answers. For a livelier pebble bay with a club and watersports just east of Becici, look at Kamenovo Beach. For a wild, undeveloped sweep with real space and the odd wave, there is Buljarica Beach south of Petrovac. And for a secluded golden sand cove worth the steep walk, consider Drobni Pijesak Beach. The single condition that flips it more than any other is wind. On a still morning both beaches reward you. As the afternoon breeze builds, Becici stays the gentler swim and Jaz becomes the better place to be on the water rather than in it.
