Becici or Drobni Pijesak: Montenegro Coast Compared

Two sandy shores, two very different days. Which suits families and paddlers, which suits quiet swimmers, and the conditions that flip the answer.

Published 2026-09-10. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

Here is the short version before you commit a morning to either. If you want to arrive, park nearby, hire a lounger, put a paddleboard on flat water and have a bar within reach for the children, go to Becici Beach. If you want a small golden cove, clear water and the feeling that you have left the resort strip behind, and you do not mind earning it with a steep walk or a boat ride, go to Drobni Pijesak Beach. Both are genuinely sandy, which is rare on this pebble heavy coast, and that is the one thing they share. Almost everything else pulls them in opposite directions.

This is not a case of one beach being better. It is a case of two beaches solving different problems. Becici is a nearly two kilometre sweep with a whole town of service behind it. Drobni Pijesak is a pocket of sand about two hundred and fifty metres long with a single seasonal restaurant and not much else. Pick the one that matches the day you actually want, not the photo.

The sand and the setting

Both deliver soft footing, which is the reason either one is worth the trip. Becici runs as a long, continuous sweep of soft sand and fine gravel from the Zavala peninsula down to Rafailovici, gently sloping into the water so that entry is easy for small children and nervous swimmers alike. It feels like a proper sandy beach day, and it backs onto a full resort frontage of hotels, bars and promenade.

Drobni Pijesak, whose name means fine sand, is a compact cove of soft golden sand hemmed by green hills. There is no strip behind it, no long promenade, no rows of hotels. The scale is intimate, the setting is quiet, and the sand shelves gently into clear turquoise water. If your idea of a good beach is one where the horizon is water and hillside rather than buildings, this is the one that delivers it.

The simple test: Becici gives you space plus service. Drobni Pijesak gives you seclusion and asks you to bring your own comfort.

The water, and when each one is at its best

Both bays tend toward the calm end, but for different reasons and with different rewards. Becici sits sheltered by the hills that ring it, so the sea reads calm and almost lake like on most days, clear and gently shelving. That is what makes it one of the friendlier stretches on this coast for swimming and, above all, for stand up paddle and kayak. The calmest window is the early morning, before the afternoon breeze arrives and before the watersports lanes fill in.

Drobni Pijesak is calm for a different reason: it is a small sheltered cove, so the turquoise water usually settles gently off the sand and the rocky edges reward a snorkel. The catch is that the same shelter that keeps it peaceful also makes the cove fill quickly on a calm summer day, because there simply is not much shoreline to go around. A still early morning here is the beach at its absolute best, before the boats and walkers arrive.

As always on this coast, conditions are typical rather than guaranteed. Becici has seasonal lifeguard cover that is never assured, and Drobni Pijesak you should not expect any at all. Swim within your depth at both, mind the rocks in the cove and the watersports lanes and boat traffic at Becici, and follow local advice on the day.

Facilities: a resort versus a konoba

This is the widest gap between them, and probably the deciding factor for most readers.

Becici is a full resort beach. Along the sand you will find sunbed and umbrella hire, bars and restaurants, watersports, and paddleboard and kayak rental, with a promenade linking the beach to Budva in one direction and to Rafailovici and Kamenovo Beach in the other. There is free public access, but large stretches are given over to paid sunbed concessions and beach clubs, especially in front of the hotels. Those rates and any minimum spend are run by independent operators and are to be confirmed.

Drobni Pijesak keeps it minimal on purpose. A small konoba style restaurant and a few sunbeds operate in season, the beach itself is free public access, and there is little natural shade. There is no resort strip to fall back on. For a full day you should bring water and an umbrella, because the simplicity that makes the cove peaceful is also the thing that leaves you self reliant. If you want the day handled for you, this is not the beach to choose.

Getting there and parking

Becici is effortless to reach. It sits right beside Budva, an easy trip by taxi, local bus or a pleasant walk along the seafront promenade. Drobni Pijesak is the opposite: it lies off the main coastal road between Sveti Stefan and Petrovac near the village of Rezevici, reached by a steep path or a narrow access road, with very limited parking in summer. Many visitors find that arriving by kayak or a small boat along the coast is the easiest and most pleasant way in. That difficulty is precisely why the cove stays quiet, so treat the awkward access as a feature rather than a fault.

Crowd and character

Becici is busy and built up in summer. It can absorb a lot of people because it is so long, but the middle of the day in July and August is a lively resort scene, not a retreat. The trick is to work the timing and the geography: come in the early hours, and head for the Rafailovici end of the bay where a quieter patch and some rocks to snorkel wait, or toward the Zavala headland for the Dukley club scene. There is a version of Becici that feels calm, and it lives at the edges and the beginning of the day.

Drobni Pijesak is quiet by nature, but small, which means it has its own kind of pressure. The cove fills on calm summer days simply because there is so little of it. The answer is the same as Becici in spirit but sharper in practice: arrive early or come by boat. Get there before the crowd and you have one of the most peaceful sandy corners on the coast. Turn up at noon in August and you may find the sand already taken.

So which one wins

Let me be direct about who should choose what, and about the moment the answer flips.

  • Families with young children win at Becici. Easy access, gentle entry, shade and food behind the sand, and a promenade for the pushchair. The family focused stretch of this coast rarely gets simpler than this.
  • Paddleboarders and casual swimmers win at Becici. Flat sheltered water, hire on the sand and a long bay to explore. Take the early window before the breeze.
  • Couples and quiet seekers win at Drobni Pijesak. A small golden cove, clear water and no resort noise. If a tucked away shore is the goal, this is the pick.
  • Anyone chasing that turquoise cove photo wins at Drobni Pijesak, provided they arrive early and bring their own shade.

Now the conditions that flip it. If you are travelling without a car, or with a stroller, or with anyone who cannot manage a steep path, the answer becomes Becici regardless of your taste, because Drobni Pijesak simply asks too much of the approach. Equally, if it is a peak August afternoon and you value calm above convenience, the small cove can be overwhelmed, and the smarter move is Becici at its quieter Rafailovici end, or an early start at the cove before anyone else thinks of it. And if you want the sheltered flat water specifically for paddle and kayak, Becici wins even for people who would normally chase seclusion, because the long calm bay is built for it in a way the tight cove is not.

The honest read: Becici is the reliable all rounder that occasionally feels too busy, and Drobni Pijesak is the beautiful reward that occasionally feels too small. Match the beach to your day and neither will let you down.
