Balangan Beach or Berawa Beach: Which Bali Shore Wins

An honest head to head between Balangan and Berawa. We pick a winner for surfers, club goers, sunset chasers and families, and say when each one flips.

The verdict in one screen

These two beaches sit on the same island and share almost nothing else, so the honest answer is not which is better but which is right for the day you have planned. If you came to Bali to surf a long, clean wave, to sit on genuine white sand under limestone cliffs and to watch the sun drop into the sea, go to Balangan Beach on the Bukit peninsula. If you came for the beach clubs, the pools, the music and a crowd, go to Berawa Beach on the Canggu coast. Balangan is a wild bay with warungs and a reef. Berawa is a wide run of dark sand with some of the island's biggest clubs behind it. Both are free to walk on. Neither is a swimming beach.

That last point matters more than any other, so read it twice. Balangan is a reef break with a rocky entry, and Berawa is a working surf coast with currents that are best treated as unsupervised. Cover from a lifeguard is seasonal and to be confirmed at each. If your priority is a calm, safe swim, the honest advice is that neither of these belongs on your shortlist, and the reef sheltered east coast is the smarter call. What follows is for everyone else.

Sand and setting: cliffs against club row

This is where the two beaches split most cleanly. Balangan is a bright white sand bay backed by tall limestone cliffs, and it feels more dramatic than the resort beaches to the east. The setting does a lot of the work: you drop down from the clifftop into a pocket of pale sand and turquoise water with the reef peeling in front of you. It is a beach you photograph without trying.

Berawa is the opposite kind of beauty. The sand is volcanic black, a wide and flat run of dark grey that gets hot underfoot by midday and stretches out for a long walk at low tide. There are no cliffs and no drama in the sand itself. The spectacle at Berawa lives behind the beach, in the wall of clubs, cafes and restaurants that make this stretch of the Canggu shore famous. If you find black sand beaches handsome in their own moody way, Berawa delivers. If you dreamed of picture postcard white sand, Balangan wins that contest without a fight.

Simple rule: choose Balangan for the sand and the view, choose Berawa for what is built behind the sand.

The water: two very different kinds of surf

Both are surf coasts, but they surf differently and they suit different surfers. Balangan is a long left hand reef break that draws a steady, committed crowd. It rewards intermediate and advanced surfers who can handle a rocky, reef strewn entry and a wave that keeps peeling down the bay. The dry season trade winds from April to October groom that left into its best form. Beginners will find it a lot to take on, and the exposed rocks at low tide make casual paddling around tricky.

Berawa is more democratic in the water. It carries beach and reef breaks that work for surfers of most levels, so a morning session before the clubs open is part of the appeal. The currents are real, which is why the sea here is best left unsupervised in your own risk assessment rather than treated as a swim spot. For a first ever lesson, though, neither of these is the classic choice. That honour on this coast belongs to the forgiving beach break at Batu Bolong, the friendliest place to learn in Canggu.

So on water alone: Balangan for the surfer who wants a quality reef wave and will earn it, Berawa for the surfer who wants a decent morning wave and a full social day afterwards.

Facilities: barefoot warungs against big clubs

Here the gap is at its widest, and it is the single fact most likely to decide your day. Balangan keeps things modest and cheap. A string of sandy warungs runs along the bay with simple sunbeds, basic surf hire and a clifftop view. These barefoot warungs are the heart of the beach, serving cold drinks, coconuts and simple Indonesian plates through the afternoon. There are no pools, no daybed service and no DJ. That is the point of it.

Berawa is built for the opposite appetite. The facilities are excellent, with some of Bali's biggest beach clubs sitting right behind the sand alongside surf hire, cafes and restaurants. The published guidance names Finns as among the largest on the island with a full party scene, Atlas as vast and high energy, and La Laguna as more whimsical and lantern lit. Each takes bookings, and entry fees and minimum spends vary by club and by day and are to be confirmed. If a lounger by a pool with food and drink brought to you is the day you want, Berawa is the answer and Balangan simply cannot offer it.

  • Want a coconut and a sunbed in the sand for very little: Balangan.
  • Want a pool, a menu and a scene: Berawa.

Crowd and mood

Balangan pulls a surf leaning, lower key crowd. People come for the wave, the sunset and a slow lunch on the sand, and the mood matches that. It has a wild edge because the facilities are light and the reef sets the rules. Berawa's crowd is bigger, younger in spirit and club oriented, and the larger venues lean firmly towards a party feel by evening. Both are busiest in the dry season from April to October, which is also when the surf is cleanest and the sunsets most reliable, so if you want either at its quietest you will be trading away the best conditions. You can read more about timing on the wider Bali seasons guide.

When the other one wins

No single verdict survives every reader, so here are the situations that flip the answer.

Berawa wins if

You are travelling as a group with mixed interests, some surfing and some not, and you want everyone happy in one place. The clubs give the non surfers a pool and a menu while the surfers take the morning break. Berawa also wins for anyone whose whole trip is built around the beach club calendar, which is the busiest here in the dry season. If you want to compare your options across the island, the Bali beach clubs overview is the place to start.

Balangan wins if

You want white sand rather than black, a quality reef wave, and a sunset over open water. Note one honest wrinkle: the beach itself sits below the cliffs and cannot quite see the sun touch the sea, so the golden hour trophy shot needs a short walk up to the clifftop viewpoints at the northern end of the bay. Balangan also wins on cost of a simple day, because a warung sunbed and a coconut ask far less of your wallet than a club minimum spend.

Two honest caveats before you pick

First, do not choose either for swimming. If a calm, family swim is the real goal, treat both as day trips for the surf and the scene, and plan your beach time elsewhere. Our family focused Bali guide points you to gentler water. Couples chasing a quieter, more romantic shore should look at the couples guide or the secluded beaches roundup instead of the Berawa club strip.

Second, if the choice is really between learning to surf and joining the club scene rather than between these two exact beaches, widen the frame. The wider Canggu coast holds several breaks within a short ride, and the Bukit peninsula around Balangan hides cove after cove such as Bingin Beach, a tiny white sand pocket under the cliffs ruled by a world class reef. For a related matchup on the surf beginner question, our take on Balangan against Batu Bolong goes deeper.

So which one

Pick Balangan for cliffs, white sand, a long left and a cheap, barefoot day. Pick Berawa for pools, clubs and a crowd, with a surf thrown in before the music starts. Get honest with yourself about whether you came to Bali for a wave and a view or for a lounger and a scene, and the winner chooses itself.
