Balangan or Batu Bolong: Which Bali Beach Wins

An honest head to head between Balangan and Batu Bolong in Bali, with a clear winner for surfers, beginners, sunset chasers and social crowds.

Published 2026-08-19. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

The verdict first

These two beaches sit on opposite sides of Bali's southwest, and they solve very different problems. Go to Balangan Beach if you want drama: a bright white sand bay under limestone cliffs, a long left reef break for intermediate and advanced surfers, and a sunset that feels earned. Go to Batu Bolong Beach if you want ease and company: the most forgiving learner wave in Canggu, a wall of beach bars behind the sand, and a social afternoon that rolls straight into golden hour.

Neither is a swimming beach, and that matters more than any other single fact here. Both are surf coasts. Balangan is a reef break with a rocky entry, and Batu Bolong is a beach break with real currents running through it. If a calm, easy paddle is the point of your day, both are the wrong call, and we say where to go instead further down. But if you have come to Bali for the surf, the scenery and the sundowners, then the choice between these two is genuinely worth thinking through, because the answer flips depending on who you are and what you can handle in the water.

Short version: Balangan is the wilder, more scenic surf and sunset bay for people who can already stand up on a board. Batu Bolong is the friendly, busy, easy to reach beach for first timers and for anyone who rates the bar row as highly as the waves.

Sand and setting: cliffs versus a bar strip

This is the clearest contrast between them, and for a lot of readers it decides the whole thing. Balangan is a white sand bay hemmed in by limestone cliffs on the Bukit peninsula, and it is noticeably more dramatic than the resort beaches to the east. You descend to a bright, cliff backed cove that photographs beautifully and feels a world away from the traffic above. The trade off is that the beach itself sits below the cliffs, so from the sand you cannot quite watch the sun touch the sea.

Batu Bolong could hardly be more different underfoot. This is volcanic black sand, dark grey and coarse, and it gets hot by the middle of the day. It widens noticeably at low tide, which is when the beach feels most generous. What Batu Bolong lacks in raw scenery it makes up for in life: surf schools, cafes and a famous beach pub all sit right above the sand, so the setting is social rather than solitary. If the mood you want is atmospheric and remote, Balangan wins. If you want to feel part of a scene, Batu Bolong wins.

The water: who each break is really for

Here is where honesty matters most. Balangan is known for a long left hand reef break that peels down the bay and pulls a steady crowd of surfers. It rewards intermediate and advanced surfers, and the dry season from April to October grooms it into its cleanest form. The entry is rocky and reef strewn, and the rocks are exposed at low tide, so both getting in and getting out demand care. This is not a place to learn.

Batu Bolong is the opposite proposition. It is the most beginner friendly break in Canggu, a soft, forgiving beach break with plenty of surf schools and board hire right on the sand. If you have never surfed and you want to try, this is one of the best places on the island to start. The catch is the crowd: the line up gets busy, so the standard advice is to go early, take a lesson and stay patient with the traffic in the water. Currents still run here even though the wave is gentle, so it is a learner's wave rather than a safe swimming pool.

To put it plainly: if you can already surf and you want a quality wave with a view, choose Balangan. If you are learning, or you want a lesson before a lazy afternoon, choose Batu Bolong. That single question, whether you can already stand up, does more to settle the decision than anything else.

What about swimming?

Neither beach is built for it. Balangan's reef and rocky entry make casual swimming tricky, and low tide exposes the rock. Batu Bolong's currents and coarse dark sand mean it is better for surfing and socialising than for a proper swim. Treat the sea at both as unsupervised, because lifeguard cover is seasonal and to be confirmed at each. If a calm swim is what you are after, the reef sheltered east coast is the honest answer, and you can plan that trip around our guide to calmer family days on the island instead.

Facilities and crowd: warungs versus a beach pub

Balangan keeps things simple and cheap. A string of sandy warungs runs along the bay, serving cold drinks, coconuts and simple Indonesian plates, with sunbeds to rent in the sand. These barefoot warungs are the heart of the beach, and basic surf hire is on hand. There is a clifftop view above, and a small parking fee is sometimes charged up top. This is modest by design, and that is part of the appeal.

Batu Bolong runs a fuller operation. Facilities here are excellent by the standards of a surf beach: surf schools, board hire, beach bars, cafes and a famous beach pub all sit right above the sand. The bar row is one of the liveliest in Canggu, and most people pair a morning surf with a long, social afternoon and sunset. There is also a temple at the northern end worth a respectful look. If you like a busy, buzzy beach with plenty to do out of the water, Batu Bolong is squarely your kind of place.

The crowd follows the facilities. Balangan draws surfers and travellers chasing a wilder, quieter scene. Batu Bolong pulls a younger, more social crowd, and the beachfront pub that anchors it is known for its event nights. Prices and schedules at that pub are to be confirmed, so check ahead rather than assuming.

Sunset: two different rituals

Both beaches face the right way for a good evening, but you experience it differently. At Balangan the sun drops over the water, and the dry season delivers the best of it, but because the sand sits below the cliffs you should walk up to the clifftop at the northern end for the full golden hour, where there are viewpoints and a few stays and pools. At Batu Bolong the sunset is a communal affair from the bar row, drink in hand, with the dry season again bringing the most dependable evenings. One is a short climb for a view, the other is a seat at a bar. Pick the ritual that suits your energy.

When the other one wins

No single beach is right for everyone, so here is where each flips.

  • You are a complete beginner: Batu Bolong wins outright. Balangan's reef is no place to learn, and the friendly Canggu break with schools on the sand is exactly what you need.
  • You already surf and want the better wave and the better scenery: Balangan wins. The long left under the cliffs beats the crowded learner break for quality and atmosphere.
  • You want a lively afternoon with bars, cafes and a crowd: Batu Bolong wins, thanks to that beach pub scene above the sand.
  • You want a quieter, more dramatic setting and cheap barefoot warungs: Balangan wins.
  • You are chasing full scale beach clubs and pools rather than warungs: honestly, neither is your beach. That is the club heavy stretch at Berawa, home to some of the island's biggest clubs, with entry and minimum spends to be confirmed.
  • You want a tiny, atmospheric cove and do not mind a steep climb: consider the pocket cove at Bingin, another Bukit reef beach, before you commit.

How they fit the wider coast

It helps to see these two in context. Batu Bolong is one stretch of a longer black sand run, and if you like the sound of it you may want the full picture of the surf and cafe coast at Canggu before you settle in. Balangan belongs to the cliff backed Bukit in the south, a different world of white sand and reef. Timing matters for both: the dry season from April to October is the sweet spot, and our notes on choosing your season in Bali explain why the surf and the sunsets are at their most reliable then. For a slower, more private feel on either coast, our roundup of quieter corners of the island is a useful companion.

Planning a club day instead

If reading all this has convinced you that what you actually want is a daybed, a pool and full service rather than a warung or a bar stool, that is a different plan entirely.
