Arone or Erbaju: Which Corsica Beach Suits You

An honest head to head on two Corsica beaches. Arone for a wide family bay and sunset light, Erbaju for empty sand and silence.

Published 2026-10-02. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

Here is the verdict before you scroll. If you want a wide, welcoming bay with shallow water, a seasonal restaurant behind the sand and the best western light in the last hour of the day, drive to Arone Beach. If you want a long, undeveloped strand where you can walk for ten minutes and see almost no one, and you are willing to carry in every comfort yourself, cross the headland to Erbaju Beach. These two shores answer opposite questions. One is built, in a gentle way, for families and sunset chasers. The other is built for nobody, which is exactly the point.

Both sit on the Corsican coast, both are free, and both reward June and September over the August crush. From there they diverge hard. Below I set them against each other on sand, water, facilities and crowd, and I am specific about the conditions that flip the answer from one to the other.

Who each beach is really for

Arone is a west facing bay with pale gold sand that runs soft and wide, shelving gently at the centre. That gentle shelf is the whole case for bringing children. There is a seasonal beach restaurant and snack spot behind the sand, so a family day does not hinge on packing a full kitchen. The trade is the road: a slow, winding approach from Piana that rewards patience rather than punishing it. Treat Arone as a destination for the afternoon and evening, not a quick roadside stop, and it makes complete sense.

Erbaju is the other temperament entirely. It is a wide, natural strand backed by dunes and maquis, with no club, no kiosk, no gated area and no shade. Most visitors reach it by parking at nearby Roccapina and walking over the headland, which takes only a few minutes but acts as a natural filter on numbers. The far end is known to attract naturists, which tells you how private and undeveloped the place feels. If silence and space are the luxury you came to Corsica for, this is where you find them.

Short version: Arone suits people who want a comfortable bay with services and company. Erbaju suits people who want neither.

Sand and setting

Arone gives you a classic broad bay shape, pale gold and soft, curving between rock at either end. The best spot is the far southern end, where the sand meets rock and the late light lingers longest. It is open and sunny, which is lovely for a swim and a problem if you need shade, because natural shade is thin. Plan for sun cover of your own.

Erbaju is longer, wilder and more elemental. The sand is natural and undeveloped, with dunes behind rather than a restaurant. The best place to settle is simply the open middle, where you can put real distance between yourself and the handful of other people who made the same walk. There is no shade here either, and crucially no way to buy any relief once you arrive, so the sun planning that is advisable at Arone becomes non negotiable at Erbaju.

Water and swimming conditions

This is where the two beaches share a trait and then split on it. Both face the open sea and both are at their calmest on a settled morning. At Arone the water is clear and usually calm early, sheltered enough that mornings are the flat window swimmers prefer. Because the bay faces west, a typical afternoon breeze can build and raise small waves. That is a predictable rhythm you can plan around: swim early, chase light late.

Erbaju is more exposed to swell. On a calm day the water is clear and the swimming is genuinely pleasant. When the wind blows it turns lively with waves, and there is no one watching the water at any time. Arone may have seasonal patrols, though these are to be confirmed and never guaranteed, so both beaches should be treated as unsupervised. Read the sea yourself at either one, mind any current, and do not swim alone in surf. Neither beach, and no beach, comes with a safety promise.

The condition that flips the water question is wind. On a low wind, settled day the gap narrows and Erbaju can be as calm and clear as anywhere. On a breezy afternoon Arone stays the more manageable of the two, and Erbaju becomes a place to walk rather than wade.

Facilities: a real difference, not a small one

Do not gloss over this, because it is the single biggest practical divide.

  • Arone: limited but present. A seasonal beach restaurant and snack behind the sand. Toilets are to be confirmed. Enough to get through a long day without carrying everything.
  • Erbaju: none. No toilets, no food, no water, no shade, no lifeguard. You bring everything in and you carry every scrap of litter back out.

Neither beach is a club with daybeds or bottle service, and I will not pretend otherwise. Arone is an open public beach with a restaurant behind it. Erbaju is fully wild. If an organised day with loungers and service is what you actually want, these are the wrong two beaches, and you would look instead at the Corsica beach clubs listings.

Crowd and atmosphere

Arone draws families and sunset lovers, and in August it draws cars. It never feels like a private cove, because it is a known bay with a restaurant, but June and September bring far fewer vehicles and a more relaxed mood. There is gentle life here: people, a place to eat, the easy social hum of a shared beach.

Erbaju is the quietest beach in this comparison by a wide margin. The walk over the headland keeps numbers low, and the length of the strand swallows the few who come. If the idea of other people near your towel bothers you, this is the answer. If the idea of no shop, no toilet and no backup unsettles you, it is the warning.

When the other one wins

I am not crowning one beach overall, because they solve different problems. Here is where each takes the day from the other.

Choose Erbaju over Arone when

You are a walker or a solitude seeker, you have packed water, food and sun cover, and you want space and silence above all comforts. Pick a settled, low wind day, park at Roccapina, make the short crossing, and claim a stretch of the open middle. On that kind of day Erbaju delivers something Arone structurally cannot: emptiness.

Choose Arone over Erbaju when

You have children, you want a gently shelving centre to the bay, you would like lunch without a rucksack, or you are building the day around the last hour of western light. The winding road is the price, and the payoff is a wide, clean bay that holds its glow late. For families especially, the gentle shelf and the restaurant behind the sand tip it decisively, even with shade thin and patrols unconfirmed. Our wider notes for travelling with children sit in the family guide to Corsica, and the seasonal timing logic that favours June and September is laid out in the best time to visit overview.

The quick decision

Ask yourself one question: do you want services and company, or space and silence? If services and company, Arone. If space and silence, Erbaju. Then check the wind, because a calm day narrows the gap and a breezy afternoon widens it, pushing you toward Arone for a swim and leaving Erbaju as a place to walk the sand.

If you still want to weigh Arone against other western bays, two related head to heads cover it: the comparison with a quieter exposed strand in Arone or Cupabia, and the town beach alternative in how Arone stacks up against Calvi. For a broader map of the coast, the Corsica beach hub gathers the rest, and solitude hunters will find kindred shores in the secluded beaches edit.

Want a club day instead of a wild one

Neither Arone nor Erbaju is a beach club, so if you would rather have a lounger, shade and table service arranged for you, start with the destination page for beach clubs across Corsica. From there you can enquire about a club day that fits your dates and your group, and keep these two beaches for the mornings and sunsets they do so well.
