Gili Air East or Meno Sunset: Gili Islands Beaches

Gili Air East Beach has the whitest sand and a free shore snorkel. Gili Meno Sunset Beach wins the still evening. Here is which Gili shore suits you.

Published 2026-10-05. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

The verdict, before you book the boat

This is not a fair fight in the usual sense, because these two beaches sit on different islands and answer to different parts of the day. So rather than crown one, I will tell you plainly who each one is for. Go to Gili Air East Beach if you came to snorkel, if you rise early, and if you are counting what you spend. It has the whitest, widest sand on Gili Air, a reef you can swim to straight off the shore for free, and it faces the sunrise over Lombok and the Rinjani volcano. On the best value island of the three, it is the strongest all round beach day you can have without paying for a boat.

Go to Gili Meno Sunset Beach if you came to slow right down, if you are travelling as a couple, and if a still, unhurried evening matters more to you than snorkelling or saving money. It is a west facing reef flat where the sun drops behind Gili Trawangan over flat water, with low palms, few people and almost no noise. The sunset is free, the mood is gentle, and the island around it is the quietest of the Gilis.

So the one line answer: morning and snorkelling and budget point to Air East, evening and romance and quiet point to Meno Sunset. Now here is exactly what separates them, and the conditions that flip the result.

Sand

If sand alone decided this, Air East would take it. The material is clear that this is the whitest sand on Gili Air, soft and wide along the east shore, and widely considered the prettiest on the island. It is the sort of pale coral sand you plant a towel on at dawn and do not want to leave.

Meno Sunset holds its own, though. It is soft pale sand backed by low palms, wide enough for a quiet afternoon, and it has a scarcity the busier islands lack. You are rarely fighting for space. The difference is character rather than quality: Air East is the showpiece stretch, Meno Sunset is the quiet retreat. Both are white sand, both are public, and both cost nothing to lie on.

Water and snorkelling

Here the two shores pull apart. Air East is built for snorkelling. The water is calm and clear, described as a sheltered east facing flat with reef close to shore, and you can wade in from the white sand to find coral and fish a short way out. It is rated one of the best free shore snorkels in the Gilis, so a mask of your own saves the cost of a boat tour entirely. Come in the morning for the clearest water.

Meno Sunset is a different kind of water. It is a calm, shallow reef flat that stays gentle on the sheltered west side, which is lovely for a wade and a float at the right tide, but it is not the snorkelling draw. For coral off Meno you want the island's other shore, where the reef sits closer. The west side earns its keep after the sun gets low, not under it.

One honest caveat on both: there is no lifeguard cover anywhere on the Gilis. Conditions here are typical rather than guaranteed, the reef flats can run thin at low tide, and water shoes save your feet from the coral. Check the tide before you go in, on either shore.

Crowd and mood

Air East is quietest soon after dawn and gradually fills as day visitors spread along it, which is simply the price of being the island's prettiest sand. If you want it at its calmest, be the one who gets there before the boats land and the loungers wake. It rewards early risers twice over, with empty sand and the clearest snorkelling of the day.

Meno Sunset is quiet almost by default. Meno is the calmest island of the three, with far fewer rooms and warungs than its neighbours, so even at its golden hour the west shore stays low key. If crowds and music are what you are escaping, this is the shore that delivers it. That same thin choice is also the catch, which I will come to.

Facilities and value

This is where Air East widens its lead for most travellers. Facilities are good for the Gilis, with cafes, warungs and dive shops within an easy walk of the shore, and Gili Air is the best value of the three islands. Plenty of cheap warungs and rooms mean a beach day here can cost close to nothing if you bring your own gear. The whole island leans affordable in a way its neighbours do not.

Meno is the opposite case. Facilities on the sunset side are limited, a scattering of low key beach bars and warungs, and the island has few ATMs, so carry enough cash for your stay. More importantly, Meno can be expensive to sleep on, because its thin choice of rooms tends to push prices up. The honest move, straight from the island's own logic, is to base yourself on cheaper Gili Air and visit Meno for the day. That keeps the sunset free and the bed cheap.

The sunset at Meno costs nothing to watch. Buy a drink from a warung or the shop rather than a beachfront bar and the whole evening stays cheap. The spend is optional, the sky is not.

When the other one wins

Everything above points a budget snorkeller toward Air East. But there are clear situations where Meno Sunset is the right call instead.

  • You are a couple after a slow, romantic evening. Meno Sunset is the quieter, softer choice, and it pairs naturally with the kind of trip set out on our guide to the islands for couples.
  • It is late afternoon, not morning. Air East faces the sunrise, so once the light starts to drop you are on the wrong side of the island. Meno Sunset is pointed exactly where the show happens.
  • You want space above all. On a busy dry season day, the west shore of Meno stays calmer than almost anywhere, which is why it earns a place among the island's more secluded stretches.
  • You are already on Meno and the tide is high. A high tide fills that shallow flat and makes the swim far more pleasant than a thin low tide wade.

And the reverse, the moments that flip you back to Air East:

  • You want to snorkel for free. The reef off Air East is the easy winner, and Meno Sunset is not a snorkelling shore.
  • You are watching the budget on where you sleep, not just where you sit. Air East sits on the cheaper island.
  • You are an early riser. Nothing on Meno Sunset competes with a quiet dawn snorkel over the Air East reef.

How to get the best of both

The islands are small and the crossings are short, so you do not have to choose only one. A tidy plan is to snorkel and sun at Air East in the morning, then take a short hop for the evening. If you would rather keep the whole day on Gili Air, its own west side, Gili Air Sunset Beach, gives you the swings and the volcano backdrop without a second boat. If you are weighing where to actually stay and land, the practical arrival shores are worth a look: Gili Air South Beach is the connected, best value base on Air, while Gili Meno East Beach is the cheapest, most convenient side of Meno and a fine sunrise snorkel in its own right.

Timing matters for both beaches. The dry season months of May to September bring the calmest, clearest water for the Air East reef and the clearest skies for the Meno sunset, which is set out in more detail in our notes on when to visit. For the wider lay of the land across all three islands, the Gili Islands hub is the place to start.

Enquire about a club day

If you would rather frame your day around a daybed, a drink and a reliable spot to settle between swims and sunsets, browse the options on our Gili Islands beach club page and enquire there about booking a club day. It is the simplest way to lock in your base before you decide which shore gets your morning and which gets your evening.
