The verdict

Best for. Couples who want a small, calm, clear cove with a jungle backdrop and far fewer people than the town beaches, within a short drive south of Puerto Vallarta.

Best spot. The rocky points at either end for a snorkel, where the emerald water is clearest and the reef fish gather over the shallows.

Know this. The beach fronts the Garza Blanca resort, so it feels private, but by Mexican law the sand is public up to the tide line and you may walk and swim it.

Sand
Soft golden sand
Playa Garza Blanca is a short, soft crescent of golden sand tucked below the jungle on the south shore. It is small and neat, more intimate cove than sweeping beach, framed by rocky points at each end.
Water
Calm, clear, emerald
A rocky barrier softens the swell, so the water is usually calm and unusually clear for the bay, a deep emerald green that is lovely to swim and good to snorkel. Conditions still shift with weather, so read the sea before you go in.
Entry
Public by law
Every beach in Mexico is public up to the high tide line, Garza Blanca included, even though it sits in front of a resort. You are free to walk and swim here, though the loungers and service on the sand belong to the hotel and its guests.
Facilities
Resort behind, little public
The Garza Blanca Preserve resort sits above the beach with its own beach service for guests, but there are no public kiosks or hire stands. Bring your own water, shade and snacks, since as a non guest you cannot rely on the resort's facilities.
Lifeguard
None, to be confirmed
There is no public lifeguard on the beach. The rock protected water is typically gentle, but with no patrol you swim at your own judgement, so stay within your depth and keep an eye on children near the rocks.
Best months
November to May
The dry season from November to May brings the sunniest skies, calmest sea and clearest water, and it is the prime time to visit. The summer rains from June bring lush green hills but warmer, stickier days and the chance of afternoon storms and murkier water.
The honest read

Garza Blanca is one of the small south shore coves that most Puerto Vallarta visitors never reach, and it is all the better for it. While the crowds fill the wide, lively sand of the Zona Romantica and Los Muertos in town, this little emerald cove sits a short drive south, where the mountains of the Sierra Madre drop straight into Banderas Bay and the jungle comes right down to the sand. It is small, calm and quietly beautiful, backed by the Garza Blanca resort but open, like every Mexican beach, to anyone who walks onto it.

The honest read is that Garza Blanca feels private without quite being so, and that is the thing to understand before you go. The resort above the beach lends it a hushed, exclusive air, and the loungers and beach service on the sand are for hotel guests, not the public. But Mexican law keeps the beach itself public up to the tide line, so you are free to walk down, spread a towel and swim, provided you bring your own water and shade and do not expect to use the hotel's facilities. Do that and you have one of the calmest, clearest little coves in the bay largely to yourself.

For two, Garza Blanca is a genuinely romantic alternative to the busy town beaches. The water is a clear emerald, gentle enough for a long swim and clear enough for a snorkel over the rocky points, and the jungle backdrop makes it feel a world away from the malecon just up the coast. Come for a quiet morning swim, then head back into town for the food and the sunset, since the Zona Romantica does both better than anywhere on the bay. My south shore day is an early swim and snorkel at Garza Blanca, a boat or a drive back, and a long dinner in town as the light goes.

The club layer

A resort beach, not a public club

The service on Garza Blanca belongs to the resort. For a public beach club day, the town and the marina are the place.

The beach club style service on Garza Blanca, the loungers, the drinks and the shade, belongs to the Garza Blanca Preserve resort and is set aside for its guests. As a day visitor you are welcome on the public sand and in the water, but you should not count on using the hotel's beds or bar, and it is honest to plan around that rather than turning up expecting service.

For a proper public beach club with a lounger and a cocktail, you look back toward town and the marina, where Puerto Vallarta's beach club scene is concentrated. Our Puerto Vallarta beach clubs guide gathers the venues worth your day. At Garza Blanca, bring your own kit, keep it simple, and let the cove and the snorkel be the point.

South along Banderas Bay

Garza Blanca lies on the south shore of Banderas Bay, around fifteen to twenty minutes by car south of central Puerto Vallarta on the coast highway toward Mismaloya. The beach sits below the Garza Blanca resort, and public access is by the shoreline rather than through the hotel, so the simplest approach for a non guest is on foot along the sand from a neighbouring beach or by water taxi from town.

Bring your own water, shade and snacks, since there are no public kiosks on the beach, and pack a snorkel for the clear water at the rocky points. Aim for the morning, when the sea is calmest and the light on the emerald water is best, and plan to head back into town for lunch, dinner and the sunset, which the Zona Romantica does far better than the quiet south shore.

Common questions about Garza Blanca

Can the public use Garza Blanca beach?

Yes. Like every beach in Mexico, Playa Garza Blanca is public up to the high tide line, even though it sits in front of the Garza Blanca resort. You are free to walk onto the sand and swim. What you cannot rely on as a non guest is the resort's loungers, shade and beach service, which are reserved for hotel guests, so bring your own water and shade.

How do you get to Garza Blanca beach?

Garza Blanca is on Puerto Vallarta's south shore, around fifteen to twenty minutes by car from the town centre on the highway toward Mismaloya. Because the resort sits above the beach, public access is along the shoreline rather than through the hotel, so many visitors arrive on foot along the sand from a neighbouring beach or by water taxi from town.

Is Garza Blanca good for swimming and snorkelling?

Yes. A rocky barrier keeps the water calm and unusually clear for the bay, a deep emerald that is pleasant to swim and good to snorkel, especially around the rocky points at each end where reef fish gather. There is no lifeguard though, so judge the sea for yourself, stay within your depth and keep children close to the rocks.

Is Garza Blanca better than the Puerto Vallarta town beaches?

For a quiet, clear swim, yes, it is calmer and cleaner than the busy town beaches of Los Muertos and the Zona Romantica. For food, atmosphere and sunset, the town wins easily, with far more restaurants, bars and life. The ideal plan uses Garza Blanca for a morning swim and the town for the evening.

When is the best time to visit Garza Blanca?

The dry season from November to May brings the sunniest weather, calmest sea and clearest water, and it is the best time for the cove. The summer rains from June turn the hills a lush green but bring warmer, stickier days and the chance of afternoon storms and murkier water. Mornings are calmest whenever you go.
