Klong Khong Beach
Best for. Slow travellers and couples who want a mellow, unpolished sunset beach with laid back bars and a boho mood rather than resorts and loungers.
Best spot. A low cushion at one of the beach bars for the sunset, with a high tide swim earlier in the day when the water covers the rocks.
Know this. At low tide the shore turns rocky and shallow with seagrass and coral, so swimming is best planned around high tide and the sunset is the real draw.
Klong Khong is the beach that holds the old, mellow soul of Koh Lanta. On the west coast, backed by casuarina trees and a string of low key bars and bungalows rather than big resorts, it is a long, natural stretch of soft sand that has kept its barefoot, unpolished character. Its reputation rests on two things, the sunset and the laid back bar scene, and on both counts it delivers a slower, gentler evening than almost anywhere else on the island.
The honest read is that Klong Khong is a sunset beach first and a swimming beach second. At high tide the water is calm and inviting, but at low tide the sea draws far back over rock, seagrass and coral, and the swimming all but disappears, which surprises anyone who arrives at the wrong hour expecting a clear turquoise dip. Check the tide before you plan your day, and treat the water with care as there is no lifeguard. Come for the mood, the hammocks and the light rather than a full day in the sea.
For a slow paced evening it is hard to beat. Time a swim for high tide earlier in the day, then settle onto a low cushion at one of the beach bars as the sun drops, the fire spinners warm up and the whole beach exhales. This is a place sold as chilled out, and unlike many it genuinely is, provided you come for the sunset and the unhurried bar culture and not for a polished resort day. Bring water shoes for the rocks, cash for the bars, and no rush at all.
Beach bars, not day beds
Klong Khong runs on cushions, hammocks and sunset bars rather than a rank of loungers and day beds.
The honest answer is that Klong Khong has no polished beach club with day beds and minimum spends. Its club layer is a string of laid back beach bars and bungalow places, where a floor cushion, a cold drink and a fire show at sunset are the whole offer, and that gentle, barefoot scene is exactly why people love it.
If you want a more designed pool or beach club day, the smarter resorts further south on Koh Lanta carry that style, and our Koh Lanta beach clubs guide sets out which are worth it and which are only a view with a markup. Prices, opening dates and any minimum spend are set by each venue and are to be confirmed at booking.
On the west coast
Klong Khong sits on the west coast of Koh Lanta Yai, roughly ten to fifteen minutes by road or scooter south of the main hub at Klong Dao and Saladan, where the ferries and the bridge road arrive. Taxis, songthaews and scooters all reach the beach easily, and most of the bars and bungalows sit right on or just off the sand, so once you are here nothing is far.
Bring water shoes for the rocky low tide shore, cash for the beach bars, and reef safe sunscreen, and check the tide chart before planning a swim as the sea retreats a long way at low water. There is no lifeguard, so take the usual care. For calmer all day swimming, the sibling beaches of Klong Dao and Klong Nin offer easier water, while the quieter south of the island rewards a longer drive.

Common questions about Klong Khong Beach
Is Klong Khong Beach good for swimming?
It depends on the tide. At high tide the water is calm and easy for a swim, but at low tide the sea draws back over rock, seagrass and coral and swimming becomes difficult. Check the tide before you plan, bring water shoes, and take care as there is no lifeguard.
Is Klong Khong Beach free to visit?
Yes. Klong Khong is a public beach with free access, and the only cost is what you choose to spend at the beach bars and bungalows for a drink, a cushion or a meal. That keeps a mellow day and a sunset here easy on the budget.
What is Klong Khong Beach known for?
It is known for its sunsets and its laid back, boho bar scene. A string of relaxed beach bars run on cushions, hammocks, sunset drinks and the occasional fire show, giving Klong Khong a gentler, more unpolished mood than the resort beaches elsewhere on Koh Lanta.
Does Klong Khong Beach have beach clubs?
Not in the day bed and minimum spend sense. Its club layer is a run of laid back beach bars rather than polished clubs. For a designed pool or beach club day, the smarter resorts further south on the island are a better fit, as our Koh Lanta beach clubs guide explains.
When is the best time to visit Klong Khong Beach?
The November to April dry season brings the calmest sea, the clearest sunsets and the liveliest bar scene. The May to October monsoon is wetter with rougher water and many places closed, so the dry months are the time to come, ideally arriving for a high tide swim and staying for sunset.
