Galley Bay faces the open Caribbean and is one of the few bays on the island that genuinely catches a swell. That means the water ranges from a gentle swim on a calm day to a real shore break and body surf when it is breezy. On its good days it is lovely. On its breezy days it suits confident swimmers far more than small children, and the surf can build. There is no lifeguard at either beach, so you judge the water yourself in both places, but Galley Bay asks more of that judgement. The reef end is the spot to head for. Galley Bay is not built for it: its variable, swell prone water and undeveloped sand mean there is no easy reef to reach and no gear to rent. Darkwood keeps things simple but useful. Beyond that it is open public sand with no gate, no fee and no minimum spend, so anyone can walk the whole strand. It is the more practical beach for a full day when you would rather not haul a cooler.
Galley Bay is the opposite trade. The served loungers, bar and food all belong to the adults only resort at the north end, and the public stretch is quiet and largely undeveloped, with no beach club, no vendors and no showers. That is precisely why it is so peaceful, but it means you must bring water, shade and supplies of your own, and treat the resort areas as guest space unless you arrange access.
