Campeche or Joaquina: The Florianopolis Winner
Published 2026-08-22. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.
The verdict first
If you want the beach day with the best add on, pick Joaquina. If you want the beach day with the best day trip, pick Campeche. That is the honest shortcut, and it holds for most travellers landing on the east coast of Florianopolis with a single free afternoon and a decision to make.
Both are open Atlantic surf beaches. Both have consistent, powerful waves, seasonal lifeguard cover that is never assured, and a line of kiosks and surf schools along the sand. Neither is a still, shallow paddling bay, and neither should be sold to you as one. So the choice is not really calm versus wild. It is which flavour of wild, and what you want to do once the surf lesson is over.
Joaquina Beach suits surfers, sandboarders and active travellers who want a dramatic stage: firm golden sand, championship grade waves and the towering Dunas da Joaquina rising behind the beach. Campeche Beach suits surfers, kitesurfers and active families who want a long, lively run of fine pale sand and a genuinely special boat trip to a protected island just offshore. Read those two sentences again and you probably already know your answer.
Sand and setting: dunes versus island
The land behind the sand is where these two separate most clearly. Joaquina gives you a broad run of firm golden sand backed by a field of tall dunes that is one of the icons of the island and the home of local sandboarding. The sand there is compact enough to give a fast ride, which is why the dunes are a highlight even if you never rent a board and only walk up to look.
Campeche runs longer and finer, a broad stretch of pale sand along the east coast, framed by the green hump of Ilha do Campeche sitting just offshore. Behind it is a proper beach town, so there are more shops and restaurants in the neighbourhood than you tend to find behind Joaquina. If your idea of a good beach day includes wandering out for a coffee or a meal beyond the kiosks, Campeche has the deeper hinterland.
Neither setting is quiet in the classic sense. For that you would look elsewhere on the island entirely, at a wild reserve like Lagoinha do Leste, reached only on foot or by boat. These two are lively by design.
Water: both demand respect
Here is the part that matters most, and the part too many guides soften. Both beaches face the open Atlantic with consistent, powerful waves, currents and shore break. Joaquina has hosted international surf championships. Campeche is one of the island's premier surf beaches all year round. That power is exactly why the surf community loves them, and it is exactly why they are demanding swims rather than gentle ones.
Neither is a beach to hand to a toddler and turn your back. On both, the sensible plan is the same: watch the flags, swim near the towers, keep within your depth, and treat conditions as typical and never guaranteed. Lifeguard cover on both is seasonal and cannot be relied on outside the busy summer.
The difference is what each offers as a calm alternative, and this is where the two beaches quietly diverge.
- At Campeche, the calmer water is offshore, on the day trip to Ilha do Campeche, where a settled day brings clear, gentle water lovely for swimming and snorkelling.
- At Joaquina, the calmer water is inland, at the lagoon of Lagoa da Conceicao a short drive away, which is far safer for a gentle dip.
So both beaches solve the same problem in different directions. Campeche sends you out to sea by boat. Joaquina sends you back to a lagoon by car. Which appeals to you is a real part of the decision.
The signature activity, head to head
Joaquina: the sandboard
Joaquina's trump card is the Dunas da Joaquina. You can rent a sandboard from vendors at the foot of the dunes, either a stand up board or the wider skibunda board that suits beginners, typically for a small hourly fee that is to be confirmed. It is fun, it is fast, and it needs no crossing, no booking and no cap on numbers. You simply walk up and go. For families with older, active children, that immediacy is a genuine advantage: surf in the morning, board the dunes after lunch, swim the lagoon before dinner, all within a short radius.
Campeche: the island
Campeche's trump card is Ilha do Campeche, a protected natural and archaeological treasure with Atlantic forest, walking trails, clear water and dozens of ancient rock inscriptions. You reach it only by authorised boat, a crossing of a few minutes from Campeche itself, with numbers capped at about 700 visitors a day. That cap is the catch. In high summer and on holidays you need to buy tickets in advance, and the round trip cost is roughly thirty to fifty US dollars and to be confirmed. It is more effort and more planning than a sandboard, but the payoff is one of the finest day trips in Florianopolis, combining pristine sand, gentle water and real heritage.
So the activities flip the same way the verdict does. Joaquina rewards spontaneity. Campeche rewards planning.
Crowds, facilities and getting there
Both beaches are free and both line the sand with kiosks, cafes and surf schools for food, drink, lessons and board hire, with exact charges to be confirmed. Joaquina adds public restrooms and showers at the beach and sandboard rental at the dunes. Campeche leans on the surrounding neighbourhood for its wider spread of shops and restaurants.
Joaquina lies around fifteen kilometres from downtown, an easy drive, taxi or ride app trip, with bus lines linking the centre and the Lagoa area, and parking near the beach. Most visitors pair it with a stop at the lagoon anyway, which makes the calm water swim almost automatic. Campeche is reachable and free on the main beach, with the extra logistical step being the boat if you want the island.
On timing, the two beaches keep slightly different calendars. Joaquina's classic season is the warm summer from November to March, busiest but best for the surf and the dunes. Campeche's sweet spot is the spring shoulder from September to early December, when warm days meet thinner crowds and easier island tickets. If you are still mapping your dates, the wider guidance on choosing your season is worth a read.
Where the other one wins
Pick Joaquina, but switch to Campeche if you have young children who can only really swim in genuinely calm water and you would rather take them somewhere protected than drive to a lagoon. The sheltered water on the Ilha do Campeche trip is the gentler option of the two, and a beach town behind you means easier bathrooms, snacks and shade between sessions. Families weighing the whole island will find more in our family beach guide.
Pick Campeche, but switch to Joaquina if the island cap has filled, if you did not book ahead, or if the idea of a boat crossing simply does not appeal. Joaquina gives you a full, self contained day with no ticket to buy and no numbers to beat, and the dunes are a spectacle that Campeche cannot match on land.
And if your real craving is calm, clear swimming with a scene attached rather than a surf challenge, be honest with yourself and go north instead. The sheltered bay at Jurere Internacional is one of the calmest swims on the island, while the cliff framed, Blue Flag sand of Praia Brava suits couples who want style with their swell. Those looking for a romantic angle can browse our couples shortlist, and quiet seekers our guide to the island's wilder, quieter shores.
The overrated trap to avoid
The one mistake we see most often is treating either Campeche or Joaquina as a family paddling beach because the photos look inviting. They are not that, and the open Atlantic here changes with the swell. If small children are the priority, use the calm alternatives each beach points you to, and read the sea before anyone goes in. A beautiful surface is not a safety promise.
Plan a club day around your beach
Neither Campeche nor Joaquina is about daybeds and pools, so if you want that polished club side of Florianopolis to bookend your surf days, look to the north coast scene. Browse the destination's beach club listings to compare venues and enquire about a club day, and start from our wider Florianopolis hub to build the rest of the trip around your winner.
