Blacks Beach or Del Mar Beach: San Diego showdown
Published 2026-09-13. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.
The verdict, before you drive anywhere
These two San Diego beaches are not really rivals. They are opposite answers to the same question, and the moment you know what kind of day you want, the choice makes itself.
Choose Blacks Beach if you are a strong walker on a budget, an experienced surfer chasing a serious break, or a naturist who wants a wild, free, almost empty strand and does not need a toilet, a lifeguard tower or an easy path to the sand. Choose Del Mar Beach if you want a wide, clean, comfortable strand with grassy parks behind it, restrooms and showers on hand, and you are happy to park cleverly and bring food to keep an expensive town from stinging you.
Put more plainly: Blacks trades every convenience for space and solitude, and asks you to earn it on a steep trail. Del Mar hands you comfort and easy access, then charges for the parking and the lunch. Neither is better overall. One is right for you today.
The sand and the setting
This is where the gap between them is widest. Blacks is a long, broad, wild strand of soft sand that runs for roughly two miles below tall sandstone bluffs, with no buildings behind it at all. That emptiness is the whole point. It stays wide and quiet long after the city beaches feel packed, and there is a genuine sense that you have walked off the edge of the map. The northern stretch below the Gliderport has long been one of the best known clothing optional beaches in the country, while the southern end nearer La Jolla is not, so you can pick your section to suit your comfort.
Del Mar gives you a broad, well kept sandy beach too, but the character could not be more different. It is backed by the grassy Powerhouse and Seagrove parks up on the bluff, which means lawns for a picnic, easy access and room to spread out away from the waterline. It is a manicured, upscale North County beach rather than a wild one, and that suits a lot of people perfectly. If you want polish, greenery and a village a short walk back, Del Mar wins on setting without a contest.
Rule of thumb: Blacks is space and wildness, Del Mar is comfort and convenience. Decide which word matters more and you have your beach.
The water and the surf
Both face the open, cool Pacific, so neither is a sheltered swimming cove, and conditions at either are typical rather than guaranteed. That said, they are not remotely the same in the water.
Blacks is fed by the deep Scripps Canyon just offshore, which pushes a strong and serious surf break that draws expert surfers. This is not a gentle paddling bay, and the size can be considerable, especially through winter when the swell arrives and the beach becomes a place to watch as much as to enter. If you are a confident surfer, that break is a large part of why you are here. If you are not, respect it. We make no promises about safety at any beach, and there is no lifeguard tower on the sand at Blacks.
Del Mar offers open surf too, with a typical beach break that suits confident swimmers and bodyboarders. It is gentler than the rocky spots and more forgiving than the Blacks break, a wetsuit helps, and it sits within reach of staffed lifeguard towers in the warmer months. That combination is why families feel far more relaxed here. Always read the flags before anyone goes in, and keep young children in the shallows near a tower.
Facilities: the deciding factor for many
If you have children, older relatives or simply a low tolerance for hauling gear, this section probably settles it.
- Blacks Beach: almost nothing on the sand. No restrooms, no cafe, no rentals, no shade and no lifeguard tower. That absence is exactly what keeps it wild and free, but it means you carry your own water, food, shade and rubbish, and there is nowhere to buy so much as a bottle of water once you are down.
- Del Mar Beach: restrooms, showers, seasonal lifeguard towers and the grassy parks above, with the cafes, shops and restaurants of Del Mar village close by. Hours and seasonal cover for the towers vary and are to be confirmed, so never assume the water is patrolled.
The honest read is simple. Families wanting facilities should go to Del Mar. If you have your heart set on the wild feel of Blacks but need toilets and food nearby, a staffed beach a short way south is the sensible alternative, and you can always watch the Blacks break from the clifftop trail without committing to the descent.
Getting there, and getting down
Access is the hidden cost at Blacks. You reach the sand by a short but steep and often slippery trail from the Torrey Pines Gliderport, or by the rougher and more eroded Ho Chi Minh trail that most people sensibly avoid, or by the long flat walk south from Torrey Pines State Beach at low tide. Wear proper shoes, judge the descent honestly before you start, and check the tide so you are not caught against the bluffs. The upside is that the clifftop Gliderport parking is free, so once you have walked down, the day itself costs nothing.
Del Mar flips the equation. The sand is free public beach, the walk to it is easy, but the real cost of the day is parking. Metered spaces and lots near the beach add up quickly in this pricey town. The value move is to park free in the residential streets a few minutes back, or take the train to nearby Solana Beach and walk in, then bring your own food rather than paying village restaurant prices. If you want to plan the timing around cost and weather, the seasonal guide to San Diego is worth a look.
Crowds and atmosphere
Blacks is one of the emptiest strands in the county precisely because it is hard to reach and offers nothing to buy. You come for solitude, surf and a sense of the wild, and outside the peak surf days you will often find great swathes of open sand. It rewards people who actively want fewer neighbours, which is a rarer taste than the crowds at the famous beaches suggest.
Del Mar carries a busier, more sociable air, and it gets noticeably busier during the summer thoroughbred racing meet at the Del Mar racetrack just inland, when the town fills, accommodation costs more and parking tightens. For a cheaper, quieter beach day, come outside the race season or arrive early on a weekday morning. Couples after a comfortable, upscale stroll will find Del Mar the easy pick, and it slots neatly into a couples itinerary along the coast.
When the other one wins
Here is where the answer flips, because the conditions matter as much as the beach.
Del Mar wins the moment you add children, mobility needs, or a simple wish for a toilet and a coffee without a mission. It also wins on a big winter swell, when the Blacks break becomes a spectacle for experts rather than a place to bring the family, and when a rising tide would squeeze the walkable sand below the bluffs. It is the better choice too if you want lawns for a picnic and a village within a block, and it fits happily into a family beach plan.
Blacks wins when you crave space above all else, when the surf is firing and you have the skill to use it, when your budget is tight and you would rather spend nothing than pay for parking and a lunch, or when you simply want the wildest free shore in the city and are fit enough to earn the descent. For that hunt for solitude, it sits comfortably among the county's more off the radar stretches of coast.
Still torn? A couple of tie breakers
If you want the clearest water in the city for snorkelling rather than either of these, La Jolla Cove is the real prize, though its patch of sand is tiny. If your priority is a wide free strand that stays roomy but keeps its facilities, Coronado Beach splits the difference between the two beaches here, and we cover that matchup in our Blacks against Coronado comparison. For pure value with fewer crowds, Imperial Beach is the cheapest day in the county, provided you check the water quality advisory first.
Turn a beach day into a club day
Neither Blacks nor Del Mar is a beach club scene, so if you want loungers, service and a booked spot on the sand elsewhere in the region, plan that separately. Browse our San Diego beach club listings to see what is available and to enquire about reserving a club day, and use the wider San Diego beach hub to build the rest of your trip around it.
