Bacvice or Copacabana: Dalmatian Coast Beaches Compared

An honest head to head between Bacvice in Split and Copacabana in Dubrovnik, with a clear winner for families, swimmers and night owls on the Dalmatian coast.

Published 2026-09-05. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

Here is the short answer before you read another word. These two beaches sit in different cities, so the real question is not which is better but which day you want. Choose Bacvice Beach in Split if you want genuine sand under your feet, water shallow enough for a toddler to wade a long way out, and a shore that turns into a bar and club scene once the sun drops. Choose Copacabana Beach on the Lapad peninsula in Dubrovnik if you want an active, well equipped family day with water sports, a floating inflatable park and step free access into the sea. Both are city beaches. Neither is a quiet cove, and if that is what you are after, I will point you elsewhere further down.

The one line verdict for each type of reader

  • Families with very small children who want sand: Bacvice.
  • Families with older, active kids who want things to do: Copacabana.
  • Visitors basing themselves in Split: Bacvice, with a caveat about the crowds.
  • Visitors basing themselves in Dubrovnik: Copacabana, unless you want the view over the swim.
  • Anyone travelling with reduced mobility: Copacabana, for the lift into the sea.
  • Night owls who want the beach to keep going after dark: Bacvice.

Sand and shore: the biggest difference of all

This is where the two part company most cleanly. Bacvice is one of the very few genuinely sandy beaches on this whole stretch of coast. It is a broad, gentle sweep of fine sand a short walk from Split's old centre and the ferry port, and that rarity is exactly why locals and visitors pile onto it. If your idea of a beach involves actual sand rather than the pebble and rock that line most of Dalmatia, Bacvice is close to unique here.

Copacabana takes the opposite approach. It is a long curving shore of pebble and concrete terraces at Babin Kuk on the northern side of the Lapad peninsula, built for activity and easy access rather than for scenery. Do not arrive expecting soft sand. The concrete terraces are there to make getting in and out simple, and one section includes a lift into the sea to help people with reduced mobility, which is genuinely useful and hard to find elsewhere. So the first honest split is this: Bacvice wins on the feel of the shore, Copacabana wins on practical access.

Water: shallow and warm versus shallow and busy with activity

Both beaches share one trait that matters for families: shallow, gentle water near the shore. At Bacvice the water stays shallow a long way out and warms quickly, so you can wade for ages before it reaches your chest. That is the reason the local game of picigin was invented here, played standing in ankle deep water and keeping a small ball off the surface with quick dives and slaps. You will see it all summer.

There is a trade off, and I will not pretend otherwise. That same shallowness means the water can look cloudy once the sand is stirred up on a busy afternoon. Come early if you want a clearer swim and more room. Copacabana's water is also relatively shallow and gentle near the shore, with marked swimming areas, which is a large part of why Dubrovnik families favour it for young children. The difference is what surrounds you in the water: kayaks, pedal boats, water sports and a floating inflatable park, so there is more traffic offshore and more to keep older children busy. At both beaches lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed, and conditions are typical rather than promised, so keep children within the marked areas, mind your depth and follow local advice.

Facilities: a night scene versus a full family kit

Bacvice surrounds you with a ring of cafes, bars and clubs on the terraces above the sand, plus showers, changing spots and food within a few steps of the water. What sets it apart is that the day does not end at sunset. The terraces behind the beach carry on into the evening, which is a real draw if you want your beach and your night out in the same place, and a warning if you were hoping for calm.

Copacabana is the more complete family setup. It is well equipped with sunbed and umbrella hire, showers, changing rooms, public toilets, bars and restaurants, water sports and the inflatable park, along with that lift into the sea. It is one of the longer beaches in the city and it is easy to reach by bus, taxi or car with parking nearby. If you want a beach where a whole family can spend a full day without running out of things to do or places to sit, this is the stronger pick.

Both beaches are free to walk onto and swim from. Loungers, umbrellas, water sports, the inflatable park and the bar terraces all carry their own charges, set by independent operators, and those rates are to be confirmed. In other words, a day at either can cost as much or as little as you decide.

Crowds and mood: loud and central both ways

Neither of these is an escape. Bacvice is busy and loud through summer precisely because it sits right in the city and offers rare sand. It is at its best early in the day, before the afternoon crowd fills the sand and clouds the water, and again in the evening if the bar scene is what you came for. July and August are hottest and busiest, while June and September keep the warmth with more room.

Copacabana is a busy, active family beach rather than a scenic retreat, and it too fills in peak season. The mood is different, though. It is lively in a family way, with the noise coming from children and water sports rather than late night music. If you want a calmer version of either, aim for the shoulder months. Copacabana runs warm from May to October, and the quieter warmth of May, June, September and October rewards anyone who can travel then, as our notes on choosing the right month lay out in more detail.

When the other one wins

The honest part. If you are staying in Split but the cloudy, crowded afternoon at Bacvice does not appeal, the answer is not to force it. Head west instead to Kasjuni Beach below the Marjan pines, where the water is clearer, the pine shade is a rarity on this coast, and a beach club holds the west facing light into the evening. It is pebble rather than sand and a short taxi from the centre, but for a clean swim it often beats the city sand.

If you are in Dubrovnik and the pebble and concrete of Copacabana feels too functional, the flip is scenery. Walk to Banje Beach just outside the Ploce Gate, where the setting, with the city walls rising to one side and Lokrum island across the water, is the main event. The water there is clear and shelves quickly into depth, which suits swimmers more than small children at the edge, and much of the lounger space belongs to a beach club. So Banje wins on the view, Copacabana wins on shallow water and things for kids to do.

And if what you truly want is that luminous turquoise and a postcard cove, both city beaches lose to Dubovica Beach south of Hvar town, reached down a steep path with a single old stone house framing some of the clearest water on the island. It has almost no facilities, which is exactly why it stays beautiful. For couples weighing scenery against convenience, our notes for couples are a good next read, while families comparing options across the region can start with the family beach overview.

So, which one

Pick Bacvice for rare sand, very shallow warm water for the smallest paddlers, the picigin tradition and a beach that becomes a night out. Pick Copacabana for an active family day with water sports, the inflatable park, a full kit of facilities and that lift into the sea. The answer flips the moment you value a clear swim or a view over sand or activity, and it flips again if you are willing to leave the city for a cove. If you want the wider picture first, the regional guide sets both cities in context, and there is a longer Bacvice or Banje comparison if Split against Dubrovnik is really the choice you are making.

Book a beach club day

If a lounger, shade and table service are part of the plan at either beach, sort it before you travel rather than on the sand. See the current options and enquire about a club day through our Dalmatian coast beach clubs page, where rates and details are confirmed with each operator.
