Bac My An or Da Nang Bay: Which Da Nang Beach Wins
Published 2026-08-22. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.
Here is the short answer before you scroll. If you want the calmest, most sheltered water in the city for a toddler or a nervous swimmer, go to Da Nang Bay. If you want softer, palm backed sand and a more restful resort district mood, and you are happy to bring your own kit, go to Bac My An. Neither is a full service tourist strip, and neither is trying to be. They win on different things, and the day you are planning decides which one is right.
These two sit on opposite sides of the city in more ways than geography. Da Nang Bay faces into the sheltered water west of the Han River, close to the centre. Bac My An lies over on the eastern coastline among the resorts. That single fact, open sea versus enclosed bay, drives almost every difference below.
Who each beach is really for
Da Nang Bay is the pick for families with very young children and for anyone who feels uneasy in surf. The bay shelters the water so it sits exceptionally calm on a settled day, with few waves and low current along Thanh Binh Beach. It is a local city beach, ten minutes or so from the centre, and it trades scenery and polish for genuinely gentle water. You come here for the sea state, not the setting.
Bac My An is the pick for families who want a quieter, prettier stretch of soft pale sand and a slower pace than the main city beaches. It is calm and gentle on settled dry season days too, with the same gradual entry as the wider coastline, but its calm is a matter of degree rather than the near lake stillness of the bay. What you gain is atmosphere: palms, space and a low key resort district feel.
Short version: Da Nang Bay wins on the water. Bac My An wins on the sand and the mood.
Sand, side by side
This is where Bac My An pulls ahead. Its sand is soft and pale, framed by palms, and it reads as a proper beach for a slow day rather than a functional strip. There is room to spread out on the open stretches, and the whole place feels quieter than the busier eastern shore.
Da Nang Bay offers a more modest run of soft sand along the bay, used mainly by locals. It is comfortable enough for a paddle and a sit, but it is narrower and more urban than the long eastern tourist beaches. If your idea of a good day is a wide sweep of postcard sand, the bay will feel plain. If your idea of a good day is calm water your child can stand in, the sand matters less.
Water, the deciding factor
If you read nothing else, read this. Da Nang Bay is sheltered by the bay west of the Han River, which is precisely why the water is so much calmer than the open coast. On a settled day it is about as gentle as Da Nang gets, and that is exactly what suits young children and cautious swimmers.
Bac My An faces the open coastline, so while it is calm and gentle in the dry season, it behaves like the wider shore. The wet season brings bigger surf from autumn, and the swell builds accordingly. On a fine February to August morning the difference is modest. On a lively day, the bay is the safer bet for small children by a clear margin.
One rule applies to both, without exception. Neither beach offers assured lifeguard cover on the open sand. At Bac My An, cover is seasonal and to be confirmed, and it is best assumed limited on the public stretches. At Da Nang Bay, you should treat the beach as unguarded and not expect a flagged swim zone. Calm conditions are typical but never guaranteed at either. Judge the sea yourself, keep children within reach, stay close to shore, and treat any posted flags as the rule. This is not a promise of safe swimming at either beach, and it should not be read as one.
Facilities and what to pack
Come prepared for both, because neither hands you a serviced lounger row.
- Bac My An: the fullest comfort here is tied to the resorts that line part of the beach, and those loungers, pools and food serve their own guests. The open public sand is simpler, so bring water, shade and snacks and plan a self sufficient day.
- Da Nang Bay: facilities are basic. A few simple cafes and some water sports operate along the bay, but there is no serviced lounger strip, so bring your own umbrella, water and snacks here too.
In practice the packing list is almost identical: shade, water, food, and low expectations of on sand service. If you need showers, chair rental and food in one place, neither of these is your base, and the section below explains where to go instead.
Crowd and mood
Both beaches are quiet by Da Nang standards, but the quiet feels different. Bac My An is peaceful in a resort district way, palm backed and unhurried, and clearly calmer than the busy developed strips. Da Nang Bay is quiet in a local way, a working city beach that never became a tourist scene, best enjoyed early when the locals are out before the heat.
If you want a restful stretch that still feels like a holiday, Bac My An reads that way more easily. If you want a genuine slice of everyday Da Nang and could not care less about the tourist gloss, the bay delivers it.
When the other one wins
Here are the situations that flip the answer, because the general verdict does not survive every case.
The bay wins even if you prefer nicer sand
If you are travelling with a toddler, a first time swimmer or anyone who panics in waves, the sheltered water of Da Nang Bay outranks the prettier sand at Bac My An every time. On a breezier day, or later in the season when the open coast surf is building, the gap widens. Choose the calm, accept the plainer setting.
Bac My An wins if you are staying east and value space
If your accommodation is on the eastern side, if you want soft white sand under palms, and if a paddle rather than a full swim is the plan, Bac My An is the more pleasant place to spend a morning. On a settled dry season day the water is gentle enough, and the mood is the reward.
Neither wins if you want a full service day
If your priority is loungers, freshwater showers, chair rental, food on tap and a daytime safety team, both of these beaches will frustrate you. That is the moment to move to the long serviced My Khe shore. Base a proper swim day at My Da, which sits on that patrolled strip with showers and chair rental close by, or at the quieter My An section backed by the An Thuong cafes and bars for easy lunches. A common and clever plan is to pair a calm early visit to the bay with a serviced afternoon on that eastern shore.
If you want atmosphere over amenities, look north too
For a third option in the same spirit, the fishing village calm of Man Thai at the foot of Son Tra offers sheltered water and basket boats at dawn with a similar bring your own kit reality. It scratches the same itch as Bac My An for peace, with a working beach character all its own.
Timing either visit
Both beaches share the same calendar. February to August is warm, mostly dry and calm, with the gentlest swimming water. From September the wet season raises the surf, and the typhoon risk peaks in October and November. Early morning is your friend at both, for the stillest sea and, at the bay, for the local atmosphere before the day warms up. For a fuller look at seasons, the best time to visit Da Nang guide sets it out, and families weighing up the whole coast can compare options on our family beach round up.
Plan a club day
Since neither Bac My An nor Da Nang Bay is a serviced club, and if you would rather book loungers, shade and food in advance, browse and enquire through our Da Nang beach clubs page to line up a full service day on the coast.
