Anne's Beach or Higgs Beach: Florida Keys Verdict

Anne's Beach or Higgs Beach in the Florida Keys. An honest head to head on sand, water, facilities and crowd, with the day that flips the pick.

Published 2026-10-19. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

Here is the short answer before you read a word further. If you are driving through the Upper Keys with small children and you want a free, unhurried stop for a wade and a picnic, go to Anne's Beach in Islamorada. If you have reached Key West and you want a proper town beach with a pier, real shade, food on the sand and plenty to keep a family busy for a full day, go to Higgs Beach. These two are not really rivals in the usual sense, because they sit roughly a hundred miles apart on the drive, and that distance is the single biggest factor in the decision. Where you are on the chain tends to settle it before sand or water ever enters the conversation.

Still, the two make a genuinely useful pairing, because they represent two different ideas of a Keys beach day. One is a quiet natural roadside wade. The other is a serviced county beach with things to do. Knowing which you actually want will save you a lot of driving, and this guide is built to help you choose with your eyes open.

Who each beach is really for

Anne's Beach suits the family with toddlers, the picnic crowd and anyone who likes a beach that costs nothing and asks nothing of you beyond bringing your own supplies. It is a free Islamorada park at mile marker 73.5 on Lower Matecumbe Key, with a boardwalk through the mangroves linking two roadside lots and passing covered picnic pavilions. The water is warm and very shallow, gentle a long way out, which is exactly what you want when a two year old wants to splash and you want to keep a calm eye on them. It is a wade and a lunch stop, and it is lovely on those terms.

Higgs Beach suits the traveller already in Key West who wants comfort and options. It is the county beach on the Atlantic shore, close to Old Town, with a wide groomed sand beach backed by a grassy, shaded park. There is a pier for a walk over the water, a beachfront restaurant beside the sand, playgrounds, a dog park and courts for tennis, pickleball and volleyball across the boulevard. It is calmer than the open Smathers strip and more central than the state park at the island's tip. For a relaxed full day with facilities within reach, it is a strong and sensible choice.

Sand

These two feel different the moment you step onto them. Anne's Beach is a narrow natural sand shoreline edged by mangroves, modest in size rather than a wide open sweep, with a coastal forest sitting right behind it. It is pretty and wild and small. Do not arrive expecting a broad resort beach, because that is not what it is and never pretends to be.

Higgs, by contrast, is a wide groomed county beach, comfortable and well kept, with the grassy shaded park behind rather than mangroves. If your idea of a good beach includes soft sand you can spread out on and walk along without running out of room, Higgs clearly wins this round. If your idea leans toward a small natural strip with a boardwalk and shade trees and nobody trying to sell you anything, Anne's has the edge.

Water

This is where honesty matters most, because neither of these is the beach you choose for the clearest swim in the Keys. Anne's Beach is warm and very shallow, flats that stay gentle a long way out, with grass and soft mud in places. It is ideal for small children to wade, but it is not a deep swimming beach, and water shoes help. The calm you find is typical rather than promised, there is no reliable lifeguard, and you should keep a close watch on children in the shallows at all times.

Higgs is usually calm and shallow too, easy for a swim and a wade, but it is not the clearest water in Key West, so treat any snorkel as a casual bonus rather than the main event. As at Anne's, do not count on a permanent watch here either, and treat the conditions as typical rather than guaranteed. The practical difference is that Higgs gives you a bit more water to actually swim in, while Anne's gives you a safer, shallower paddle for the very young.

If your real goal is clear water and marine life, neither beach is the answer. In Key West the best shore snorkel is over the rocky bottom at Fort Zachary Taylor, and the single finest natural beach in the whole chain is Bahia Honda State Park at mile marker 37. Both of those are worth a dedicated trip.

Facilities

This is the clearest split of all. Anne's Beach keeps things deliberately bare. You get the long boardwalk through the mangroves, several covered pavilions with picnic tables, and restrooms. That is the list. There are no shops, no rentals and no food on site, so you must bring your own water, food and shade. That simplicity is part of the charm, but it does mean the day is entirely on you to supply.

Higgs is the opposite. It is built for a long, easy day without much planning. The pier, the beachfront restaurant, the playgrounds, the dog park and the courts across Atlantic Boulevard give you reasons to stay put for hours. Natural shade is easier to find here too, with trees and a grassy park behind the sand plus covered picnic and play areas across the road, though an umbrella on the open sand is still a good idea. Within the park sits the historic African Refugee Cemetery memorial, a quiet and moving stop that gives the beach a sense of place few town beaches have. Do confirm restaurant and court details on the day, as hours and offerings change.

On cost and getting in

Both beaches are free to enter, which is not nothing in a chain where the best natural beaches sit inside state parks with a modest fee. Anne's is a free public park open sunrise to sunset, with two small roadside parking lots and no entry fee, which makes it one of the best value stops in the Upper Keys. Higgs is free public shoreline, but there is paid parking around the beach and park, with rates best confirmed locally on the day. So the sticker price is the same, yet at Higgs you may pay to park, while at Anne's the parking is free but limited, and the lots fill in peak season.

Crowd and timing

Both beaches follow the same Keys rhythm. December to May is the dry season, bringing the calmest clear days and the least seaweed, and it is also the prime and busiest window. At either one, arriving earlier is the most useful tip for parking. Anne's has only those two small lots, so it can fill fast on a bright winter day, and the earlier you come the better your chances. Higgs sits in a busier part of Key West, so the competition is for paid spaces rather than a tiny free lot, but the principle holds. If the calendar is flexible, our guide to timing a Keys trip is worth a look before you commit.

In terms of atmosphere, Anne's is the quieter and more natural of the two, a place to slow down. Higgs is a social, lived in town beach with locals, families and visitors mixing through the day. Choose accordingly.

When the other one wins

The pick flips on a few specific days, so here is the honest version.

  • Choose Higgs even if you love the Upper Keys when you need food, shade and facilities without carrying everything yourself, or when you have a dog, since Higgs has a dog park and Anne's does not mention dog access.
  • Choose Anne's even if you are drawn to a serviced beach when you have very young children who just want a safe, warm, shallow wade, or when you are driving through Islamorada and want a free scenic break rather than a detour to the island's end.
  • Choose neither when your heart is set on clear swimming water or snorkelling, and point the car at Fort Zachary Taylor in town or Bahia Honda down the chain instead.

If a dog is the deciding factor and you are not heading all the way to Key West, note that Coco Plum Beach in Marathon is one of the few Keys beaches that welcomes leashed dogs, another quiet natural shore for shelling and a slow wade.

The verdict in one line

Anne's Beach is the better free Upper Keys wade and picnic for little ones. Higgs Beach is the better full day town beach for families who want shade, a pier and food on hand.
