Ambrela or Hawaii Beach Pula: which Istria bay wins

An honest head to head between Ambrela Beach and Hawaii Beach Pula on the Verudela peninsula. We pick a winner for families, couples and swimmers.

Published 2026-09-07. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

Here is the short version, so you can stop reading and start packing if you already know your own mood. If you have children, or you simply want the least fussy swim within a short hop of Pula, go to Ambrela Beach. If you are a couple chasing the brightest water on this coast and you do not mind a sociable buzz around your towel, go to Hawaii Beach Pula. Both sit on the same Verudela peninsula, both are pebble rather than sand, and both hold clean, usually calm Adriatic water. What separates them is temperament, and that is what this guide is really about.

These two are close enough to walk between, which is the happy secret of Verudela. You could start your day organised and end it dramatic, or the reverse. But if you only have one afternoon and one set of expectations, the choice matters, so let us be specific about the conditions that flip the answer.

The quick verdict by type of traveller

  • Families and comfort seekers: Ambrela. Full facilities, a bar and loungers a few steps from a sheltered bay.
  • Couples who want colour and a scene: Hawaii Beach. Vivid turquoise water, rock shelves and a young, lively crowd.
  • Couples who want quiet: Neither at peak, honestly. Read the last section for where to go instead.
  • Confident swimmers and snorkellers: Hawaii Beach edges it, for the clarity and the rock platforms.
  • Anyone set on soft sand: Neither. Both are stone. Sand is a different trip entirely.

Sand, or the honest absence of it

Let us clear the biggest misconception first. Neither of these is a sandy beach, and no amount of a tropical nickname changes that. Ambrela is pebble and rock, with a few concreted sunbathing terraces built for laying out a towel and stepping down into the water. Hawaii is bright white pebble and smooth rock shelves, and that pale stone is exactly what gives the cove its famous colour. In both cases water shoes transform the day. Without them the entry is a wincing shuffle. With them you barely notice the stones and you get to enjoy the good part, which is the sea.

If soft footing is non negotiable, and it fairly is for many families with very small children, then you are on the wrong peninsula. The rare stretch of genuine soft sand in this part of Istria is Bijeca Beach at Medulin, a long shallow sweep that shelves gently into warm water. It is busier for exactly that reason. If sand versus stone is the deciding factor, we have written a separate comparison of Ambrela and Bijeca that settles it. For everyone else, pebble is simply the Istrian normal, and both of today's contenders wear it well.

The water: calm comfort versus vivid colour

Both bays are sheltered, both are clean, and both usually offer the sort of calm, easy swim that makes the Adriatic such a reliable holiday sea. Ambrela earns its blue flag on water quality and organisation, and the swim there is comfortable and unremarkable in the best way. You get in, you float, you get out, you have a drink. It is a good, honest swim in a well kept bay.

Hawaii plays a different game. The white pebble and pale rock throw the light back up through the water so it reads as a startling turquoise, the brightest swim on the Pula side by common agreement. On a calm, bright day it genuinely lives up to the name it was given. The rock platforms also mean the water gets deeper closer in, which suits confident swimmers and anyone who wants to snorkel along the shelves. That same trait is a caution for families: this is not a gradual paddle for toddlers, and there is more depth to respect.

Neither beach guarantees lifeguard cover. Seasonal presence is to be confirmed at both, and the sensible approach is to treat the sea as unsupervised, watch children as you would anywhere, and swim within your limits. Conditions described here are typical rather than promised, and the Adriatic, like any sea, has its days.

Facilities: this is where Ambrela pulls ahead

If you like your beach day fully served, Ambrela is the clear winner and it is not especially close. It sits within the Verudela resort setup, with a beach bar, loungers, umbrellas and showers close to the water. The entry to the beach itself is free, as it is at both spots, and the loungers, umbrellas and drinks are a paid extra in season. The exact operators and any spend are to be confirmed, so ask on the day, but the point stands: you can turn up light and buy your comfort on arrival. That is a real gift with children, or on a day when you simply cannot face lugging a cool box.

Hawaii is the leaner proposition. Facilities in the cove itself are limited. There is a bar scene and the resort beaches a short walk away, but the cove rewards the traveller who brings their own water and shade rather than expecting to buy it at their feet. Any loungers or hire there are a paid extra with operators to be confirmed. Treat Hawaii as a beautiful place to swim that you provision yourself, and you will not be caught out.

Rule of thumb: Ambrela is where you buy the day, Hawaii is where you bring it.

Crowd and character

The crowd is the deciding line for a lot of people. Ambrela draws the resort crowd, families, hotel guests and day trippers who want ease. It fills through the middle of the day but it never feels like a party. The buzz is the pleasant hum of a well used family beach.

Hawaii is smaller and, in peak season, busier per square metre, with a young and sociable crowd, music and a certain energy. That is a feature if you want a swim with a little life around it, and a bug if you were picturing a serene cove for two. The cove is at its most photogenic and its most peaceful in the first hour of the day and in the soft light of late afternoon, when the turquoise turns gold and the crowd thins on both sides.

When the other one wins

The answer flips on timing, tide of people and who you are with. Hawaii, which we send couples to, becomes the wrong call at the height of an August afternoon when the cove is packed and the music is loud. On that day the calmer, better equipped Ambrela is the more pleasant place to actually be, even for two. Conversely, Ambrela, our family pick, loses its edge on a still, clear morning when the sole thing you want is that unreal turquoise and a rock ledge to dive from. On that morning Hawaii is unbeatable, and you should be there at first light to claim your spot before the parking near the peninsula fills.

Season is the quiet third variable. June and September give both beaches warm water and softer crowds than the deep August peak, and in those months the gap between them narrows because Hawaii is calm enough for a family and Ambrela is quiet enough for a couple. Plan around the shoulder months and you can almost have the best of both.

If you actually want quiet, look further

Be honest with yourself here, because Verudela in summer is not the place for solitude. If a peaceful swim for two is the real goal, walk away from both and choose the pine shaded gravel of Lone Bay near Rovinj, or drive south to the wild white rock coves of Kamenjak Beach at the tip of the peninsula. Kamenjak asks effort, unpaved tracks, a park fee to be confirmed at the gate and everything carried in, but it repays you with seclusion neither Verudela cove can match. For more ideas along those lines, our guide to Istria's quieter shores and the couples' shortlist are the right starting points, while families comparing the whole coast should see the family beaches roundup.

So which one, finally

Choose Ambrela for ease, facilities and a stress free family swim close to Pula. Choose Hawaii for colour, character and a sociable dip you will photograph. Bring water shoes to either, come in June or September if you can, and start early whichever you pick. The two sit close enough that the truly indecisive can do both in a day and let the light decide.
