Golden sand was imported onto a purpose built shore and sheltered behind breakwaters, and it is kept clean and groomed all season. That is not a criticism. It is the whole point. It was not trucked in and it was not built for tourists. Water and swimming: two kinds of calm
Both beaches offer sheltered swimming, but they achieve it differently and the experience is not the same.
At Amadores the shelter is total. The breakwaters wrap the bay so the water stays calm and clear across most of it, and the centre of the bay in particular is about as gentle a swim as you will find on this coast. Lifeguard cover is typical in season. It is consistently one of the easier places to get children into the sea in the south. As always, judge the conditions on the day and follow any flags, because no swim is ever guaranteed, but the design is working in your favour here.
Las Canteras splits into moods. Offshore, a natural reef called La Barra calms much of the beach, turning the central and northern stretch into a sheltered, lagoon like swim that is clear and gentle. Head south to the La Cicer end, though, and the reef gives out, the open Atlantic swell reaches the sand, and the water gets livelier. That is a feature, not a fault. It means one beach serves both swimmers and surfers if you simply choose your stretch. The catch is that you have to know which end you want, especially with children, and it is busier at weekends.

It can get busy in peak summer, but it never feels like a city.
Las Canteras feels like a city because it is one. It is busy, local and full of life, with the rhythm of a working capital behind it. Some people find that energising and authentic. Not these two. The beach that gets over promised in Gran Canaria is the signature one, Maspalomas Beach, with its protected desert dunes. It absolutely deserves a visit for the sheer cinematic scale, and parts of it are well known naturist zones, but people arrive expecting a comfortable swim beach and find a vast, exposed, wild expanse where the dune centre has no services and the sea can get a shore break on windier days. Go there for the walk and the spectacle, and use Amadores or Las Canteras when you want a reliable day in the water.
