Alegria Beach or General Luna: pick your Siargao shore

A straight head to head between Alegria Beach and General Luna in Siargao, with a clear winner for each type of traveller and the conditions that flip it.

Published 2026-10-12. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

If you want to swim and laze on soft sand, neither of these is your answer, and we will come back to that. But between the two, the choice is actually clean. Choose General Luna if you want one lively base within walking reach of food, surf schools, sunset bars and the boat pier. Choose Alegria Beach if you want the wild, deep green north, a long empty sweep of sand for a barefoot walk and the most cinematic sunset on the island. One is a town you live in. The other is a landscape you visit. They solve different problems, and knowing which problem you have settles the whole trip.

The quick verdict

General Luna, known to everyone as GL, is the beating heart of Siargao. It is where the boats, the bars, the cafes and the whole sunset scene gather, so it is the place you base yourself rather than the beach you come to swim. Alegria, an hour north in coconut country, is the opposite proposition: raw, exposed, barely developed, often empty enough to feel like your own. GL is for convenience and atmosphere. Alegria is for space and drama.

Here is the honest framing most guides skip. The question is rarely which beach is prettier at the water line. It is whether you want to be in the middle of everything or out of it entirely. If that sentence already made you lean one way, trust it.

Sand and setting

GL has a pale working beachfront backed by palms and the town. It looks lovely at the water line and turns reefy and rocky as the tide drops, so it reads more as a place to stroll and watch the boats come in than a soft sand laze. The town itself crowds right up behind it, which is exactly why it is so useful.

Alegria is a different order of landscape. It is a long, wide sweep of natural sand backed by deep coconut groves, more dramatic and open than the southern shore, and far longer. This is the untouched Siargao that first drew travellers north, and its scale is the whole point. The best moment is golden hour on the open sand, when the low sun rakes across the empty beach and the groves behind throw long shadows. There is nothing on the south coast that competes with that light.

If your camera roll matters more than your lunch order, Alegria wins before you arrive. If you want to walk from your bed to a flat white in five minutes, it does not.

The water, told straight

This is where both beaches ask for honesty. The GL town front is shallow and clear in patches but seagrass strewn and reefy in others, and it carries boat traffic from the island hops. It is not a clean sand and swim beach, and at low tide it exposes coral and rock. The proper bathing from GL happens offshore, on a boat trip, not at the town itself.

Alegria is an exposed northern coast with surf and an open feel. There is no calm bay to shelter bathers, so it is better suited to surfing and a careful dip than a relaxed float. No lifeguard cover is reported at either beach, the coast at Alegria is surf prone, and conditions at both should be treated as typical rather than guaranteed. We make no swimming safety promise about either shore. Keep children close, read the sea, and follow local advice.

So neither of these is the swim. If a gentle, sheltered swim is your priority, the answer lies offshore from GL at the sandbar islands, where the water is clear, shallow and usually calm on a settled day. More on that below.

Facilities and crowd

This is the widest gap between the two, and it decides most trips.

GL has the island's densest run of cafes, restaurants, surf shops, pool clubs and sunset bars, plus stays for every budget, all walkable. The boat pier for the island hops sits right in town. The flipside is the crowd and the boat traffic: this is the busy, social centre, not a quiet shore. Prices vary by venue and are to be confirmed.

Alegria has very few facilities beyond a scatter of stays and simple spots inland. Natural shade is limited to the coconut groves, there is no beach club, and you should bring water, food and sun cover for the day rather than rely on services at the sand. Opening status of nearby spots is to be confirmed, so check before you ride out, especially out of season. The reward for that effort is emptiness: Alegria is often almost deserted, which is precisely its appeal.

  • Want everything within walking distance: General Luna.
  • Want almost no one around and are happy to self supply: Alegria.
  • Want a daybed and a pool with service: that is GL territory, not the north.

When the other one wins

No single answer survives every traveller, so here are the situations that flip it.

When Alegria beats General Luna

If you have already done a night or two of the GL scene and you want a half day that resets you, Alegria is the cure. Go for a late afternoon walk and stay for sunset, when the north coast is at its most beautiful. Couples chasing stillness and photographers after the best light should point north without hesitation. The drier, calmer months of roughly March to May bring the gentlest sea and the clearest light for walks and sunsets, so that window makes the trip north most worthwhile.

When General Luna beats Alegria

If it is your first visit, if you are short on time, or if you want nothing to need planning, base in GL. It puts you walking distance from the food, the nightlife, the surf schools and the boat pier, and almost every island plan starts there anyway. Surfers favour the bigger August to November swell at nearby Cloud 9, a short ride from town, and GL is the natural launch pad for that too. If the weather turns and the north coast gets windy, the town simply has more to do under cover.

The move almost everyone should make

Here is the pattern that works for most travellers: base in General Luna, visit Alegria for a sunset, and take the boats for your actual swim. The three island hop leaves from the GL beachfront and lands you on soft, pale sand with sheltered, clear water. The largest and most rounded of the trio is Daku Island, a palm fringed crescent with shade, room and a fishing village that grills the day's catch, the one island you can settle into for a whole afternoon. Pair it with the treeless dazzle of Naked Island and the castaway palms of Guyam, and you have the gentle bathing that neither GL nor Alegria can offer. A small island fee is charged on arrival, exact amount to be confirmed.

If you want to go further off the beaten track than Alegria, the quiet Pacific coast at Caridad over in Pilar trades scene for stillness and uncrowded surf, though it too is an open coast rather than a swimming bay. That is a trip for travellers who want real island life above all.

So which one

Pick General Luna as your base, every time, unless your whole reason for coming is to escape exactly that. Pick Alegria for the walk, the surf and the sunset, as a deliberate journey rather than a convenient stroll. The condition that flips it is not the sand or the water, which both ask for the same honesty. It is you: proximity and buzz against space and drama. Most people want both across a week, and Siargao is small enough to give you both. For a wider view of how the island fits together, the Siargao hub lays out the coasts, and the best time to visit guide helps you time the calmer window. Couples leaning quiet can read our notes for couples, while the head to head on Alegria against Daku Island settles the sunset versus swim debate directly.

Planning a club day in Siargao

The island's pool clubs and sunset bars gather in General Luna, not out on the wild north, so if a daybed and a swim up afternoon are part of your trip, that is where to look. Our Siargao beach clubs directory compares the southern options and is the place to enquire about a club day. We never invent a venue, a day pass or a price, so specific operators, hours and costs are to be confirmed with each club before you go.
