Akyaka or Icmeler: Which Marmaris Beach Wins

Akyaka Beach or Icmeler Beach near Marmaris, compared on sand, water, crowds and wind so you pick the right shore for your day and your swimmers.

Published 2026-10-08. Conditions described are typical and never guaranteed.

The short answer before you commit a day

If you want a calm, sandy, serviced swim with a full resort at your back and no boat or long drive involved, go to Icmeler Beach. If you want soft sand and shallow water in the morning that turns into a steady wind playground for kitesurfers by afternoon, with a clear river and a slow town behind, go to Akyaka Beach. Both sit within easy reach of Marmaris, both give you proper sand rather than the shingle that catches you out along much of this coast, and both are at their best from late spring into autumn. The decision is really about one thing: do you want steady calm all day, or do you want a beach that changes character after lunch.

That single contrast flips the winner more than any facility list. Icmeler is sheltered and consistent. Akyaka is gentle in the morning and breezy later, which delights kiters and frustrates families who show up at two in the afternoon expecting glass. Read on and I will tell you exactly when each one wins, and when I would send you to the other instead.

Sand underfoot

Both beaches clear the low bar that trips up newcomers to the Marmaris area: neither is a pebble cove. Icmeler is a clean golden strip of roughly four hundred and fifty metres, raked and well kept, wide enough to escape the busier middle if you walk toward the mountains. It is comfortable barefoot and it stays that way through the day.

Akyaka has a genuine soft sand beach too, easy underfoot and welcoming for children, with sandy shallows running out from the shore. It is one of the more comfortable strands in the whole region. The honest caveat is the wind: when the afternoon thermal builds, the surface sand can stir. On a still morning there is little between the two for feel. On a blowy afternoon, Icmeler is the tidier place to lie down.

If barefoot comfort at four in the afternoon matters to you, Icmeler holds its composure better than Akyaka on a windy day.

The water, and the catch with each

This is where the two beaches diverge in a way worth understanding before you pick. Icmeler sits round the sheltered bay under a wall of pine mountains and away from the marina, and the payoff is water that is clearer and cleaner than the Marmaris town front. The entry shelves gently before it deepens, and it stays calm through most of the day. For a straightforward swimming beach, that consistency is the main argument for making the short trip from town.

Akyaka shelves gently too and stays shallow a good way out, clear and warm at the head of the Gulf of Gokova. That same shallow flat water is exactly what beginner swimmers and kitesurfers both prize. The difference is the clock. The flat calm that makes Akyaka kind for families in the morning is the flat water that kiters chase once the wind fills in, and by then the surface can ruffle. Plan your calm swimming for the morning at Akyaka and you get the best of it. Turn up late and Icmeler is the steadier bet.

Conditions at both are typical rather than guaranteed, the water deepens as you go out at either beach, and there are no swimming safety promises here. Lifeguard cover is seasonal and not guaranteed at both, so follow any flags and local advice and keep children in sight, especially at Akyaka where kite traffic shares the bay.

Facilities and the day off the sand

Icmeler is the most serviced beach day the area offers. A complete resort sits right behind the sand, with restaurants, bars, cafes, shops, showers and toilets, plus watersports operators and pedalos along the shore. Boat trips to Dalyan and the coves leave from here as well. If you want everything to hand and nothing to organise, this is as easy as it gets, which is precisely why it suits families and anyone who simply wants to arrive and settle.

Akyaka is a proper small town rather than a serviced strand, but it fills a day differently. There are restaurants, cafes, shops, kite schools, watersports and boat trips up the clear Azmak river. The Azmak itself is a short, spring fed river of remarkably cold, glassy water that meets the sea at the edge of the village. You can take a small boat up it, kayak, or sit at a riverside table and watch the fish through the water. It is a cool change from the beach and one of the loveliest things to do in the area. So the choice off the sand is between full resort convenience at Icmeler and a slower, more characterful village day at Akyaka.

Loungers and public sand

Both beaches work the same way: there is free public sand you can spread a towel on, alongside sections run by beach venues, hotels and kite schools that lay loungers and parasols and charge for a set or expect a spend. Any set charges, day passes and kite hire are set by the venues and to be confirmed. At Icmeler the comfortable frontage fills in high summer, so arrive early for an easy lounger under the mountains.

Crowds and the feel of the place

Neither of these is a wild, empty beach, and you should not come expecting solitude. Icmeler is developed and busy, particularly in July and August, with the full hum of a resort behind it. That is the trade for all that convenience. If you want quiet over comfort, the honest move is to carry on past Icmeler to Turunc and Kumlubuk rather than to fight the crowds here.

Akyaka keeps a slower, low rise feel that the town is known for, and the crowd skews toward families in the morning and the kitesurfing set in the afternoon. It can still get busy in peak summer, but the mood is gentler and more village paced than resort Icmeler. For couples and travellers who want character over amusements, that tips the scale toward Akyaka.

Getting there

Access is a real part of this decision. Icmeler is about eight kilometres southwest of Marmaris around the bay, roughly twenty minutes by frequent dolmus minibus, a little over ten by taxi, with a shaded coastal path for walkers and summer water taxis across the bay. You can decide on a whim and be swimming within the hour.

Akyaka sits at the head of the Gulf of Gokova about thirty kilometres from Marmaris, roughly half an hour by car over the hill, or by dolmus with a change at Mugla or a direct summer service. The drive is easy and far gentler than the bends out to the Bozburun peninsula, but it is still a day trip rather than a quick dip. If you are based in Marmaris and want better water without committing to a drive, Icmeler is the practical pick.

So which one, and when the other wins

Here is how I would call it for each reader.

  • Families with small children who want calm, clear water and a full resort behind them: Icmeler, and arrive in the morning for the freshest sand and easiest loungers. See our wider notes on where to take the family across the destination.
  • Kitesurfers, or families happy to swim early then watch the wind sports: Akyaka, where the Gokova gulf delivers steady afternoon thermal wind. Wind is seasonal and never guaranteed, so check the forecast before a dedicated kite day.
  • Couples and slow travellers who value character, a riverside lunch and a village pace: Akyaka edges it.
  • Anyone short on time or based in Marmaris without a car: Icmeler, every time.

Now the honest flips. Akyaka wins the morning but loses the afternoon for still water swimming, so if your day runs late, Icmeler is the steadier shore. Icmeler wins on convenience and consistency but it is developed and lively, so if you came for peace and clear coves, neither is the answer and you should look further along the peninsula instead. For June, September and early October, both reach their sweet spot together, with warm water and gentler crowds, and at Akyaka still useful wind for a kite session. If you are weighing the calendar, our guide on timing the season is worth a look.

Prefer clear water and sailing over any beach at all? That is a different trip, closer in spirit to the quiet coves reached by boat around Bozburun, which we compare directly in our Akyaka against Bozburun head to head.
