The verdict

Best for. Snorkellers and quiet cove lovers who want calm clear water, cliffs on both sides and a real chance of swimming with green sea turtles, all off a small natural beach rather than a resort strand.

Best spot. The centre of the cove in the early morning, where turtles rest on the sandy seabed a few metres down, and the rocky edges where morays, parrotfish and sea fans gather.

Know this. The turtles are wild and visit at random, so they are never guaranteed. Give them space, do not touch or chase them, and time a calm early morning for the best water and the best chance.

The honest read

Curacao hides some of its best water in small cliff framed coves along the rugged west end, and Playa Lagun is the one that best rewards a snorkeller. It is a compact pocket of pale sand tucked at the foot of two tall rock walls, just below the fishing village of Lagun, with brightly painted local boats drawn up at one side and the open Caribbean framed between the cliffs. The scale is intimate and the mood is unhurried, a beach you can take in at a glance, and the cliffs that hem it in are exactly what make the water so calm and clear. This is nature first, scene last, the kind of cove a barefoot traveller comes back to.

The reason to come is the marine life. The cliffs shelter the bay so well that the water stays glassy and protected even when the coast is breezy, which makes it an easy, forgiving place to snorkel, gentle enough for beginners. It is also the island's best known spot to swim with green sea turtles, which drift in to rest on the sandy floor in the middle of the cove, most often in the calm of early morning. Slip along the rocky edges and you find morays tucked in crevices, parrotfish and snappers over hard corals and sea fans, all within an easy fin of the sand. There is a simple beach bar and chair hire above the cove, so a snorkel and a cold drink make an easy half day.

The honest note is that this is a small wild cove, not a managed resort beach, and it should be treated gently. The turtles are wild and turn up at random, so no day promises them, and the right way to share the water is to keep your distance, never touch, chase or feed them, and let them surface to breathe in peace. The cove is little and can feel busy when a tour arrives, so early morning gives you both the calmest water and the quietest sand. There is no lifeguard, so mind the boat channel and the rocks, watch children in the deeper middle, and bring your own mask if you can. Come at dawn, tread lightly, and Playa Lagun gives you the most alive snorkel on the island.

The club layer

A wild cove, a simple bar

Playa Lagun is a natural snorkelling cove with a small local bar above it, not a beach club. Curacao's lounger and daybed scene sits at the bigger west coast bays.

The service at Playa Lagun is deliberately light, a simple beach bar and some chair hire on the terrace above the sand, and that is all the cove needs. This is a place you come for the turtles and the clear water, not for daybeds and bottle service, and its small scale is the whole charm. Bring your mask, hire a chair or spread a towel, snorkel the cove and the rocky edges, then climb up for a cold drink and a plate of fresh fish with the cliffs and the boats below you. Nothing to book, nothing to prove, just an honest cove.

When you want a full beach club with loungers, a pool and a long lunch, Curacao gathers that at the larger developed bays such as Jan Thiel and Mambo Beach on the busier side of the island. Our Curacao beach clubs guide is honest about which of those earn their day beds and where a wild cove like Lagun gives you far more life in the water for nothing. Pair a dawn snorkel here with a served afternoon at a big bay, and let Playa Lagun stay the quiet, natural heart of the trip.

Getting there and essentials

Down to the west end cove

Playa Lagun is on the west end of Curacao, below the village of Lagun and roughly a forty minute drive northwest of Willemstad. The easy way in is a hire car down the west coast road, with a small parking area and a short walk or steps down to the sand, so it pairs naturally with the bigger west end beaches like Kenepa and Porto Mari on the same run. There is no bus of use here, so plan on driving and arriving early before the cove fills and the sun is high.

Come prepared for a small natural cove with only a simple bar for service. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you can, along with water, reef safe sun cover and a little cash for a chair or a drink. There is no lifeguard, so watch the boat channel through the cove, keep clear of the rocks at the cliff bases, and mind children in the deeper middle where the turtles rest. Treat the wildlife gently, give the turtles room, and time a calm early morning for the clearest, quietest water.

Common questions about Playa Lagun

Where is Playa Lagun in Curacao?

Playa Lagun is a small cove on the rugged west end of Curacao, below the fishing village of Lagun and about a forty minute drive northwest of Willemstad. It is framed by tall cliffs on both sides and reached by car with a short walk down to the sand, on the same coast road as the bigger west end beaches.

Can you snorkel with turtles at Playa Lagun?

It is the island's best known spot to try. Wild green sea turtles drift into the cove to rest on the sandy seabed a few metres down, most often in the calm of early morning. They visit at random and are never guaranteed, so come at dawn, keep your distance, and never touch, chase or feed them.

Is Playa Lagun good for beginner snorkellers?

Yes. The cliffs shelter the bay so the water stays calm and clear even when the coast is breezy, which makes it an easy, forgiving place to snorkel. The marine life gathers close to the rocky edges within an easy fin of the sand, so you do not need to be a strong swimmer to see plenty.

Are there facilities at Playa Lagun?

There is a simple beach bar and some chair hire on the terrace above the cove, serving drinks and fresh fish, but no beach club and no lifeguard. Bring your own mask, water and sun cover, and a little cash for a chair or a drink, since the cove is natural and the service is light.

Is Playa Lagun crowded?

It is a small cove, so it can feel busy when a snorkel tour or the midday crowd arrives, even though the beach itself is quiet by nature. The simple fix is timing. Come at or soon after dawn and you often have calm clear water and the sand nearly to yourself, which is also the best window for the turtles.

When is the best time to visit Playa Lagun?

Curacao sits below the main hurricane belt and stays warm and dry most of the year, so the cove snorkels well year round. The key is the time of day rather than the season. Early morning gives the calmest, clearest water, the quietest cove and the best chance of turtles resting on the seabed.
