Cove Bay
Best for. Couples and slow travellers who want a long, quiet, undeveloped white sand beach with shallow calm water on the southwest coast of Anguilla, and do not need facilities on the sand.
Best spot. The wide central stretch for an unhurried walk and a long shallow wade in gentle water, with space to yourself outside the peak weeks.
Know this. Cove Bay is deliberately undeveloped and quiet, and Smokey's at the Cove, long the beach's anchor, appears to have closed, so bring your own water and shade and treat food and service as to be confirmed.
Cove Bay is the beach you come to when the famous names feel too busy. It runs along the southwest coast of Anguilla near West End Village, a long quiet ribbon of soft white sand tucked between the grander Rendezvous Bay and the resort curve of Maundays Bay, and it has stayed largely undeveloped while its neighbours filled with hotels. The water is the draw for anyone who likes it gentle, shallow, clear and calm, one of the easiest entries on an island already known for good swimming, so a long slow wade here is about as unhurried as the Caribbean gets.
The honest read is that the quiet comes at the cost of facilities. Smokey's at the Cove was for years the low key beach bar that gave this sand its lunch and its live music, and it appears to have closed, which changes the day. Without it there is little shade and no reliable service on the beach, so you should arrive self sufficient with water, sunscreen and your own shade rather than counting on a bar being open. That is a fair trade for many, but it is the difference between a serviced beach day and a bring your own one, and worth knowing before you drive down.
Taken on its own terms Cove Bay is a small gift for a slow traveller. Come in the calm of the morning, walk the long empty sand, wade out into the shallow warm water and let the emptiness do the resetting that a busier beach never can. It suits couples and quiet swimmers far more than anyone after a scene, and it is honest to say the appeal is the seclusion itself rather than any amenity. If you want the loungers, dining and beach bars, the neighbouring bays carry them, and Cove is the quiet counterpoint to keep for the unhurried day.
A quiet beach, the clubs are next door
Cove Bay has no operating beach club at present, so the dining and beach bars sit on the neighbouring bays.
The honest answer is that Cove Bay is between beach bars rather than lined with them. Smokey's at the Cove was the single venue that gave this sand its lunch and music for years, and with it apparently closed there is no reliable service on the beach itself right now, so we treat any dining here as to be confirmed. That leaves Cove as a pure quiet swim rather than a club day, which is exactly why some travellers seek it out.
For the beach club and resort dining layer, the neighbouring bays deliver it, with the polished resort fronts of Maundays Bay just to the west and the long sweep of Rendezvous Bay with its beach bars close by. Our Anguilla beach clubs guide sets out which of the island's beach venues are worth the day and which are simply a lounger with a markup, and prices and opening status are set by each venue and are to be confirmed at booking.
On the quiet southwest coast
Cove Bay sits on the southwest coast of Anguilla near West End Village, tucked between Rendezvous Bay and Maundays Bay. It is roughly twenty minutes by road from The Valley and a short drive from the Blowing Point ferry that brings most visitors across from Saint Martin, reached down a quiet local road to the sand. There is no gate and no charge, and parking is informal at the beach end, so it stays as low key on arrival as it is on the sand.
Because facilities are few and the old beach bar appears closed, come self sufficient with water, sunscreen and your own shade, and plan lunch elsewhere. Treat the calm shallow water as typical rather than guaranteed and supervise children, as there is no lifeguard. For a serviced day nearby, the resort fronts of Maundays Bay and the long beach bars of Rendezvous Bay are both a short drive along the same southwest coast.

Common questions about Cove Bay
Is Cove Bay in Anguilla quiet?
Yes, it is one of the quietest beaches on the island. Cove Bay is a long, largely undeveloped stretch of white sand on the southwest coast, with none of the resort density of the busier bays, so a slow walk here often means the beach almost to yourself outside peak weeks.
Is Smokey's at the Cove open?
Smokey's at the Cove was long the beach bar and restaurant that anchored Cove Bay, but it appears to have closed, so we treat food and service on the sand as to be confirmed. Come prepared with your own water and shade rather than relying on a bar being open.
Is Cove Bay good for swimming and families?
The water is shallow, clear and gentle, one of the calmest and shallowest entries in Anguilla, which suits wading, small children and unhurried swimmers. There is no lifeguard, so supervise children closely and treat conditions as typical rather than guaranteed.
